; Battle of Nikopolis (1396). From the conquest of Bulgaria Bajazet turned to Hungary. He had already, in 1390, carried out a series of successful raids into that country; he now aspired to more permanent conquest. Sigismund, who had succeeded to the throne of Hungary in 1387, was fully conscious of the impending peril. He made a strong appeal to the other Christian princes of Europe, and in 1394 Pope Boniface IX proclaimed a crusade. One hundred thousand Paladins, the flower of the chivalry of France and Germany, nobles not a few from England, Scotland, Flanders, and Lombardy, and a large body of the Knights of St. John responded to the papal call, and enlisted under the banner of Sigismund. In the battle of Nikopolis (1396) the forces of Christendom were overthrown by the Ottomans. The larger part of Sigismund's followers were slain or driven into the Danube to be drowned; no fewer than four French Princes of the Blood and twenty sons of the highest nobility in France were among Bajazet's prisoners; of the Knights of Rhodes only the Grand Master survived, while Sigismund himself escaped with difficulty down the river, and thence by sea returned to Hungary. After the battle a force of Turks invaded Hungary, destroyed the fortresses, and carried off sixteen thousand Styrians into captivity. The triumph of the Ottomans was complete.4

"ADALINDA . She is named as wife of Acfred in their son's grant to Cluny dated 2 Oct 927, her origin being deduced from his reference to "…avunculis meis Wilelmo et Guarino…" in the same document[168]. "Acfredus" donated property to Saint-Julien de Brioude, for the souls of "genitoris mei Acfredi et genitricis meæ Adalendis et avunculorum meorum Garini atque Guillelmi et fratrum meorum Bernardi necnon etiam Guillelmi", by charter dated 11 Oct [927][169].
"m ACFRED, son of ---. His name is confirmed by his son's grant to Cluny dated 2 Oct 927[170]. According to Europäische Stammtafeln[171], he was Acfred [I] Comte de Carcassonne ([830/40]-906). The primary source on which this is based has not yet been identified. It is possible that the co-identity is based only on speculation from the Cluny charter of Acfred Duke of Aquitaine, dated 2 Oct 927, which names his parents as Acfred and Adelinda, and on the assumption that Acfred [I] Comte de Carcassonne was the only contemporary nobleman of this name[172]. Another indication that this co-identity may not be correct is the charter dated 19 Feb 906 under which "Adalindes comitissa", widow of Acfred [I] Comte de Carcassonne, donated property with the consent of "Acfredo filio Acfredo"[173]. If Acfred de Carcassonne was the same person as Acfred, father of the two dukes of Aquitaine, it is surprising that his other two known sons did not consent to, or were not otherwise named in, this donation."

“Possibly a son of Bernard Count of Autun and Dhuoda
“Bernard was born on 22 March 841, possibly son of Bernard, count of Autun, margrave of Septimanie and Dhuoda. His name of Plantevelue or Plantapilosa meant Hairy feet of Hairy paws. His mother's _Liber Manualis_ mentions that he was born at Uzès in the year following the death of the Holy Roman Emperor Louis I 'the Pious' (20 June 840). He was appointed margrave of Septimanie (or Gothia) sometime before 868. He was the lay abbot of Brioude between 857 and 868 and count of Autun from 864 to 869. He was count of Auvergne (as Bernard II) from 872 to his death. Karl III 'the Fat', emperor, king of the East- and West-Franks, granted Bernard the title of margrave of Aquitaine in 885.
“Bernard married Ermengarde, the daughter of Bernard I, comes (count) of Auvergne, and Lieugardis. They had two children, Guillaume and Adelinda. Guillaume would become Guillaume I 'le Pieux', duke of Aquitaine.
“Bernard was deposed as count of Autun sometime before 876 and replaced by Bernard of Gothia in that year. He returned to favour under Charles 'the Fat'. At sometime during the war against Boso of Provence, he obtained the county of Mâcon.
“He died between 20 June 885 and August 886.”.9

; Per Stewart email [2004]:
"...it is certain that the Bernard who was married to Liedgardis was a count & that he was lay abbot of Saint-Julien, but not that they were parents of the Ermengardis who married Bernard Plantevelue.
"A couple of differing theories that may still be circulating in some quarters are:
"Maurice Chaume's (in volume 1 of _Les origines du duché de Bourgogne_ (4 vols, Dijon, 1925-31), that she was daughter of Hugo, count of Bourges.
"Constance Bouchard's (in 'Family Structure and Family Consciousness among the Aristocracy in the Ninth to Eleventh Centuries', _Francia_ 14/1 (1986)), that she was daughter of Count Warin and Aba (Albana).
"This is part of the trilogy of pieces which I mentioned earlier, dealing with the evolution of the church's proscription of consanguineous marriages.
"In both cases the argument is largely confined to onomastics. Neither is persuasive enough to overturn the conventional guess outlined earlier, but then of course that is far enough from satisfactory that alternatives are still put forward.
"It will be interesting to see what Christian Settipani makes of this & the other Bernards and their families in the long-awaited second part of his book on the Capetian pre-history. I hope to avoid thrashing around it further on SGM, and muddying the waters for some partipants' databases, before that is published."14

The Manual of Dhuoda records the birth "XI Kal Apr", in the year following the death of Emperor Louis, at "Uzecia urbes" of the second child [Bernard] of Doda and her husband Bernard[130]. The Annales Bertiniani name "rex markiones Bernardum scilicet Tolosæ et iterum Bernardum Gothiæ, itemque Bernardum alium" in 868[131], this being Bernard Marquis of Gothia, although the date of his appointment has not so far been traced. Lay Abbot of Brioude 857/68. Comte d'Autun 864/69, deposed. "Bernardus comes et uxor eius Ermengardis" donated property "ecclesiam…in villa…Viciaco…et in villa Lubiriaco…et in villa…Dignaciaco…in…patria Arvernica in vicaria Randanensi" to Saint-Julien de Brioude by charter dated 10 Mar [867][132]. He obtained the county of Mâcon during the wars between the Carolingians and the Bosonids[137].      BIRTH     unknown, Auvergne, France
DEATH     28 Jun, Lyon, Departement du Rhône, Rhône-Alpes, France
     Born Mar. 22, 875; died Jul. 6, 925.
William was a son of Bernard II of Auvergne and his wife, Emergarde de Chalons. He succeeded his father as count of Auvergne and the Limousin in 886. In 893, William conquered Poitou and Aquitaine on behalf of Ebalus Manser, the natural son of Ranulf II of Aquitaine. He kept Aquitaine for himself and was declared duke. He held the duchy until his death (Ebalus reclaimed it in 927). Among other monasteries, William founded the Cluny Abbey. It was a Benedictine abbey that answered only to the Pope, starting a new monastic trend. He also had silver coins (denairs) minted in his name in Brioude, where he was buried. William married Engleberga, daughter of Boso of Provence and Ermengard, but left no issue.

"In his recent La Noblesse du Midi Carolingien,Christian Settipani has a slightly different version for the ancestry of Ermengarde d’Auvergne, comtesse of Blois. You will notice that Settipani proposes the existence of another new daughter of Guillaume le Pieux, comte d’Auvergne and duc d’Aquitaine, an Engelberge, married to Dalmatius, vicomte et abbe de Brioude. I am not summarizing his (rather convincing though circumstancial) argument in favor of this hypothesis because of its exceptional density and invite you simply to read it and make yourself an opinion. It is based (as usual) on onomastics and also the transmission of important properties in Auvergne. Jean Bunot. It goes like this :

"GUILLAUME ([860/65]-6 Jul 918, bur Abbaye de Brioude, Haute-Loire). "Karolus…imperator Augustus" confirms that "Willelmo comite" replaced "patris sui Bernardi comitis" after the latter was killed, by charter dated 16 Aug 886[146]. His birth date is estimated on the assumption that he was a young adult at the time. He is named as brother of "Hava abbatissa" in the latter's charter dated Nov 893[147]. "Acfred dux Aquitanorum" donated property "pro anima…et avunculis meis Wilelmo et Guarino…" to Cluny by charter dated 2 Oct 927[148]. He succeeded his father in 886 as Marquis of Gothia, Comte d'Auvergne, de Berry, de Mâcon, de Limousin, et de Lyon. The Chronicle of Saint-Maxence names "Ramnulfus comes…Pictavensis" as "consanguineus…Willelmi…comitis Arvernorum"[149], although the precise relationship has not been traced. Comte de Bourges 892. Comte de Macon, abbé laic de Brioude 893. He was recorded as dux shortly after the accession of Charles III "le Simple" King of the West Franks in 893, and as dux Aquitanorum for the first time in 909[150], later known as GUILLAUME I "le Pieux" Duke of Aquitaine. “Willelmus comes marchio atque dux” donated property to Brioude Saint-Julien, providing for “post obitum meum neque uxor mea, neque filii nostri, neque filiæ, si habuerimus”, by charter dated May 898, subscribed by “Willelmi, Ingelbergæ”[151]. “Guillelmus...comes et dux...et uxor mea Ingelberga” founded the monastery of Cluny, for “Avanæ” who bequeathed the property to him (“que michi easdem res testamentatio jure concessit”), by charter dated 11 Sep 910[152]. "Princeps et marchio Willelmus" donated property "in patria Arvernica, in comitatu Brivatense…in villa Carisiaceco" to the church of Holy Trinity "pro…animæ patris mei Bernardi et matris meæ Ermengardis…et sororis meæ Adalendis et filorum eius" by charter dated Nov 916, signed by "Ingelbergæ, Wilhelmi, Acfredi, Bosoni…"[153]. The Annales Masciacenses record in 919 the deaths of “Guilelmus famosus dux Aquitanorum...coniunx eius Ingelberga”[154].
"m (before May 898) ENGELBERGA, daughter of BOSON King [of Provence] & his second wife Ermengardis [Carolingian] ([877]-919). “Willelmus comes marchio atque dux” donated property to Brioude Saint-Julien, providing for “post obitum meum neque uxor mea, neque filii nostri, neque filiæ, si habuerimus”, by charter dated May 898, subscribed by “Willelmi, Ingelbergæ”[155]. Engelberga is named as co-founder with her husband of the monastery of Cluny in a charter dated 11 Sep 910[156]. Her origin is deduced from her donation to Cluny with her husband dated Jan 917, in which her brother "Ludovico" is named[157]. The Annales Masciacenses record in 919 the deaths of “Guilelmus famosus dux Aquitanorum...coniunx eius Ingelberga”[158]. She died as a nun at San Sisto, Piacenza.
"Duke Guillaume I & his wife had [two] children [the May 898 charter quoted above indicates that Guillaume had no daughters at the time, maybe no sons either although the text is unclear on that point (“neque uxor mea, neque filii nostri, neque filiæ, si habuerimus”)]:
a) BOSO (-[25 Dec 920/Jun 926]). "Boso filius eius" is named, immediately after "Wilelmi senioris mei", in two donation for their souls made by "Gauzfredus comes" dated 8 Apr 936 and Jun 936[159].
b) [daughter. This is a speculative connection based only on onomastics[160]. m ROTBALD [I] d'Agel [Provence], son of --- (-[949]).] "

; Per Med Lands:
"ENGELBERGA ([877]-919). Her parentage and marriage are deduced from her donation to Cluny with her husband dated Jan 917, in which her brother "Ludovico" is named[28]. The Annales Bertiniani record the betrothal in 878 of "filiam Bosonis" and "Karlomanno filio suo [=Hlodowici rex]"[29]. It is assumed that this daughter was Engelberga, who must have been an infant at the time, but no proof has been found which confirms that this is correct. "Bosonis" could refer either to the future King Boson or to Count Boson, husband of the adulterous Engiltrudis (see below). While Boson of Provence had refused to swear allegiance to Louis II "le Bègue" King of the West Franks ("Hlodowici rex") on the latter's accession, it is not known whether he was still in rebellion the following year. Assuming that some reconciliation had taken place, a marriage alliance between the two parties would have been a likely possibility. The other Count Boson was presumably of less political importance and, in addition, his problems with his adulterous wife may have rendered his daughters unmarriageable at the time. The Annales Bertiniani indicate that Engelberga was born from her father´s [second] marriage when they record that "Richardus frater Bosonis" took “uxorem Bosonis et filiam eius” back to “comitatum suum Augustudensem” in 882 after the capture of Vienne by the forces of King Carloman[30]. Engelberga is named as co-founder with her husband of the monastery of Cluny in a charter dated 11 Sep 910[31]. The Annales Masciacenses record in 919 the deaths of “Guilelmus famosus dux Aquitanorum...coniunx eius Ingelberga”[32]. She died as a nun at San Sisto, Piacenza.
