“Guy d'Avesnes, bishop of Utrecht, was born about 1253, the son of Jan I d'Avesnes, count of Hainault, and Aleida of Holland. On 21 May 1300 Guy's oldest brother Jan, the count of Holland, gave him the confiscated properties of Amstel, IJsselstein, Benschop, Woerden and Naardingerland. The village of Amsterdam, which was founded in 1275, was given its city rights by Guy who was elected Bishop of Utrecht on 5 August 1301. On 20 March 1304 he was captured by his opponents from Flanders, who imprisoned him on the island Duiveland for a time. Though he was a bishop and therefore unmarried, he fathered several illegitimate children. He died on 28 May 1317 at his castle 'ten Goye' and was buried in Utrecht.”.3
