Arnold III-IV (?) Graf von Looz und Chiny was born circa 1207; Genealogy.EU says b. ca 1210; Genealogics says b. ca 1207.1,7 He married Johanna von Chiny Heiress of Chiny, daughter of Louis IV (?) Cte de Chiny and Mathilde/Matilda (?) d'Avesnes, before 1230.1,2,3,8
Arnold III-IV (?) Graf von Looz und Chiny died between 24 November 1272 and February 1273.1,3,7
; Per Genealogics:
"Arnold was the son of Gerhard III, Burggraf von Mainz, Graf von Rieneck, and Kunigunde von Zimmern. He married Johanna de Chiny, daughter of Louis IV, comte de Chiny and Mathilde d'Avesnes. Arnold and Johanna had five sons and three daughters, of whom two sons and two daughters would have progeny.
"Arnold's marriage with Johanna de Chiny brought him the county of Chiny, as well as the estates of Givet, Agimont and Embise. In 1234 he took part in a crusade launched at the request of Pope Gregory IX against the Statingers, heretics who were probably Cathars, in the diocese of Bremen. In 1238 he helped Jean d'Eppes, bishop of Liège, to push back the attacks of Walram V von Limburg, sire de Montjoie et Sittard. The following year he reconciled Hendrik II, duke of Brabant and Wautier Berthout, seigneur de Malines. In 1240 he joined the dukes of Brabant and Limburg in attempting to reconcile Pope Gregory IX and Emperor Friedrich II.
"In 1245 in Lyons, Gregory IX's successor Innocent IV declared Friedrich II deposed, thereby undermining Friedrich's position. Friedrich then had to depose his own son Heinrich (VII) the German king, for incompetence as well as for allying himself with his father's enemies. Willem II, count of Holland, became emperor-elect, first on 3 October 1247 and again on 25 March 1252; however it was only after the death of Friedrich's son Konrad IV in 1254 that he was generally accepted. Arnold attended his investiture as emperor-elect. In February 1255 Willem II placed himself at the head of the 'Rheinische Städtebund'. However, before he could be crowned emperor he was killed, on 28 January 1256 near Hoogwoud, in a minor battle against the West Friesians.
"Arnold enjoyed the regard and the confidence of his contemporaries, and so he was able to arbitrate in several disputes. In 1232 he gave the city of Hasselt a letter in Latin, confirming its city charter giving its people the same freedom and rights as the people of Liège. Hasselt blossomed and became the most important city in the Flemish province of Limburg. He granted the same freedom to Curange, granted city status to Bilzen, and endowed several abbeys. Arnold died between November 1272 and October 1273, most probably on 22 February 1273."7
