I and my Conway cousins who have worked on my Edwin Conway's parentage that married Martha Eltonhead have concluded Edward Conway and Dorothy Tracy are NOT his parents. Evidence does indicate he could be a nephew of Edward Conway. We still have to prove which family member is his parents. Col. Edwin Conway that married Ann Ball did use a coat of arms that was slightly modified from Edward Conway's coat of arms. I am afraid most people on the internet have Edwin's parents wrong that list them as Edward Conway and Dorothy Tracy. We are continuing research on Edwin and the British Isles Conway's of other members of Edward Conway as we think Edwin does descend from that family but to who we don't know as of right now.

=== Research notes from Marianne Dillow

I am still trying to piece the lineage of my 9th great grandfather Edwin Conway Sr that married Martha Eltonhead.

Edwin shares kinship with Viscount Edward Conway and Dorothy Tracy but they are not Edwin's parents by Douglas Richardson of Plantagenet Ancestry, Magna Carta Ancestry and Royal Ancestry and also other medieval researchers which I have done genealogy with. Viscount Edward Conway that married Dorothy Tracy is the son of Sir John (II) Conway and Ellen Greville.

This is a possible lineage.

"Chasing Conways From Wales to Tennessee and Beyond" by Doralyn Short.

In the beginning...

The history of the Conway family of Medieval England begins in the year AD 1066 with Sir William Conias and the Battle of Hastings. William the Conqueror made him Sir William Conias, his High Constable of England. This William Conias was the forefather of an extensive line of Conways in Wales, England, Ireland and America including most if not all of those who came to America during the 1600's. His arms were sable, on a bend gules, cotised argent, a rose between two annulets of the first. In simpler terms his shield was black with a red diagonal stripe and a black rose in the center of the strip. There was a black annulet (donut shape), om either side by a narrow silver stripe. No two living individuals are allowed to bear the exact same arms at the same moment so Conway men appeared to individualize their arms by alternating the color of the rose and annulets as time went on.

I also have Stanley grandparents in England from Martha Eltonhead's line of Richard Eltonhead and Anne Sutton leading on to Peter Stanley and 2nd wife of CeciilyTarleton which leads to the Stanley's of Janet Stanley and William Stanley.. namely this.. one line of mine...

Sir William Stanley & Joan de Bamville.... grandparents
John Stanley & Mabelle Hausket... grandparents
Sir William Stanley & Alice Massey... grandparents
Sir William Stanley & Margery de Hooton... grandparents
Edmund Stanley of Hooton... grandparent
Janet Stanley & John Conway... grandparents
Edmond Conway & Anne Burdett...grandparents
John Conway of Ragley & Catherine Verney ... grandparents
Sir John Conway of Ragley & Helen Greville...( uncle )
Edward Conway, 1st Viscount Conway & Dorothy Tracy.. (cousin)

My possible line to Edwin Conway, Sr....

Next.. Sir William Conias

Son... John 'the Old Heir' Conway (-1486) and 2nd wife Janet Stanley.

Their son...Edward Conway of Arrow (-1547) m. Anne Burdett dau of Richard Burdett and Joyce Montfort.

Edward and Anne's son is Sir John Conway (1512-1553) . He married Catherine Verney.

Their son below... Thomas Conway (-1606) m. (1) Dorothy Hollis (2) Elizabeth Kingston. He married Dorothy Hollis 1563 in Worcestershire County. A will was filed for her in 1601 in Dumbleton, Gloucestershire, England.

There are other children on these generations so it still leaves the question as to Edwin Conway's exact father. Edwin was born as some say ca 1610, Wigorn Worcestershire County, England. He died by March 1661... Sparacio & Sparacio Virginia County Court Records Order Book Abstracts of Lancaster County, Virginia 1656-1661, 1695, p 86.

In the book, "Chasing Conways" of which I have a copy of, by Conway cousins on page 83 it has pictures of an effigy of Sir Thomas Conway and Lady Conway in the chancel of Southrop Church, Gloucestershire , England. This Conway is thought to be a younger son of Sir John Conway and Catherine Verney. He spent his entire life at court as a gentleman usher to Queen Elizabeth I. He was her servant her entire life, beginning even before she ascended the throne. After her death -, Thomas was gentleman usher to her successor, king James I. He was much more involved in the royal court and its proceedings than Viscount Edward Conway who spent much of his life in the military, mostly on foreign soil, and did not become on of its Secretaries of State until after the death of his Uncle Thomas.

This Thomas is considered the most likely candidate for ancestor of Conways of Northumberland and Lancaster Virginia.

Sir Thomas Conway (ca 1540-1606) was of Southrop, County Gloucestershire and London. He left a will in dated 1605, proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury and now preserved in the Principal Probate Registry ( Sir Thomas Conwaye, knight. P. A. B. Sowthroppe , Glouc.) He named a wife Elizabeth, a son Edmund, a daughter Bridget, Edmund Kingston and Giles Maye ( this last name may be Giles Braye or Brayne ) were named. Sir Thomas Conway died in 1606. " Captain Thomas Conway, Gent. late Governor of the poor Knights within His Majesty's Castle of Windsor, did depart his life at London in Southwarke upon the 7th day of June 1606,"

IMPORTANT:

In the effigy of Sir Thomas Conway his hands are raised on the breast of over an egg-shaped article and a large signet ring is shown on his left thumb. Sir Thomas' arms were displayed in the chancel of Southrop Church.

Chancel: Quarterly 1 and 4, (Sable) on a bend (argent) cotised (ermine) a rose between two annulets (gules), Conway , 2 and 3, Azure a cross on the field double voided or." Creuikere Crest : On helmet on Wreath Moor's head sidefaced couped (proper) wreathed (argent and azure).

These are the well known Conway arms and places Sir Thomas in the line of Henry Conway ( -1407) and Ellen Crevecuere , ancestor of both the Arrow Conway's of Warwickshire and the Bodrhyddan Conways of Wales. Viscount Edward Conway is of Arrow that married Dorothy Tracy.

IMPORTANT:

The effigy of Sir Thomas Conway in Southrop Church displayed a large signet ring on its left thumb much like the one used by Edwin (III) Conway of Lancaster Virginia. There is a photograph of it.

COL. EDWIN CONWAY according to the Virginia Archives was given a paper and the seal displayed the following arms: "Someone has written of this coat of armor, it indicates a branch of LORD CONWAY family replanted and grown to another tree, and requiring arms of it for legal purposes." ANNE CONWAY, daughter of COL. EDWIN CONWAY married ROBERT EDMONDS in 1729 in Lancaster County, Virginia which the coat of arms was on a piece of paper.

The coat- of- arms of the family of COL. EDWIN CONWAY III, is : It is blazoned:
Sable, on a bend, argent, cotised ermine, a rose, gules, between two annulets of the last."
Crest: " A Moors head, side-faced, proper, banded around the temples, argent and azure."
Motto: Fide et amore "By fidelity and love."

This Edwin Conway is often referred as COL. and he is the grandson of Edwin Conway and Martha Eltonhead by their son Edwin that is a brother to my 8th great grandmother Eltonhead Conway that married Henry Thacker, Sr, in Virginia.

In Maryland... there is a Thomas Connerye/Conway (-1654). Thomas Conway came first to Virginia and then moved to St. Mary's settlement in Maryland. In the transcribed Maryland records his name is spelled with an , r rather than the traditional w. We have a copy of both signatures of Col. Edwin Conway and this Thomas Connerye/Conway and they are similar in appearance.

This Thomas had a warrant dated December 1650. Conway's 200 acre tract was called Connery's Neck. In 1660 his 200 acre tact was possessed by Cornelius Kennedy. On the 1705 rent rolls of St. Mary's County, the 200 acre, tract, now called Thomas Connery's land lay in Resurrection Hundred, on the border with St. Mary's Hundred. Today the land is part of Greenwell State Park.

On 17 Jan 1652/3, this Thomas appointed Friendship Tounge as his attorney to recover a debt and Cuthbert Fenwick witnessed the transaction. Cuthbert married Jane Eltonhead..

When this Thomas Conway died in 1654, the Maryland Court ordered the Estate of Thomas Connery to pay William Eltonhead 304 pounds of tobacco and casks' due by Specialty produced in Court. In 1656 the court records show that Richard Collett produced a letter of Administration on the Estate of Thomas Connery and Mrs. Eltonhead, "in whose hands the the Estate is, Shall deliver the Estate of the said Connery upon Oath to the said Collett Administrate of the said Connery. Mrs. Eltonhead was Jane Girard Eltonhead , widow of the slain William Eltonhead and daughter of Thomas Gerard.

This Thomas Connerye/Conway traveled in the same circles and had dealings with the same individuals as Edwin Conway, Sr. It seems reasonable that they could be brothers.

These are to let you understand that I am ELIAS EDMONDS his Last Will & Testament, Sole Overseer of his Estate & see that his Children not be cheated nor defrauded of their Estate their Father left them, yet JOHN MERIDITH & WALTER HEARD not giveing the Court inteligen ce thereof as I hear obtained an Order for Administration of the Estate, nor I haveing not any notise thereof saying that his Mother in Law, Mrs. EDMONDS, made no Will, thereof the Court granted Letters of Administration (Now I can proved but the Court is so remoat that I cannot bring witnesses) that Mrs. FRANCES EDMONDS made a nun cupative Will which I know in Law is authentick besides there are great debts claimed by some, namely Mr. MERIDITH out of the Estate p accompt wch. I know is contrary to the Act of Assembly in such cases, yet notwithstanding, if it be MERIDITHs right God forbid but he should have it, but I can proved that the great accompt brought in against ELYAS his Estate did nothing appertain to ELYAS nor ought not to be paid out of the sd Estate all which I can prove & shall make appear at the next Court MERIDITH his pretence is that I am a PAPIST and ought not to have the bringing up of the Children which God knows was none of my intent but that some honest careful man shou'd breed them up & not diminish the Estate which I am shure is a good Virginia Estate. There is not all incerted in the Inventory besides the debts ought to be paid before Legacies. It was Mr. EDMONDS wil & desire that his Estate should not be administered on nor anyways alienated by appraisers, therefore I beseech you if it be possible not to grant Letters of Administration until the next Court held for this County for I conceave the Children to be in a desperate condition if you let the sd MERIDITH & HEARD proceed in what they desire the Inventory is not as yet proved nor the Will therefore good Sir. if it be possible grant a reference of all business of that Estate to the next Court held at Majr.
