Sir Henry Norris married Mary Fiennes, daughter of Thomas Fiennes KB, 8th Lord Dacre and Anne Bourchier.2,1
Sir Henry Norris was born circa 1500.1
Sir Henry Norris died on 17 May 1536 at Tower Green, London, City of London, Greater London, England.1
; per van de Pas: [quote]King Henry VIII's friend, Sir Henry Norris, was the king's Groom of the Stole; one of his duties was to sweep a sword under the king's bed and behind any wall-hanging which might conceal an assassin.

At this time Sir Henry Norris was a widower and it was presumed that he considered taking the pretty Margaret Shelton for a second wife. One day Queen Anne Boleyn asked him why he did not marry her at once, to which he replied 'I will tarry awhile'. Anne Boleyn teased him and asked: 'You look for dead men's shoes? For it ought but good came to the king, you would look to have me.' It was a joke, to which Norris replied that if his head ever entertained such a thought it deserved to be cut off.

When King Henry VIII grew tired of Anne Boleyn, there seemed to be only one option: to accuse her of treason. In a queen, adultery was treason; therefore it had to be proven that she had been unfaithful to Henry VIII.

On 1 May 1536 there was jousting at Greenwich and, unable to participate, Henry VIII lent his horse to his friend, Sir Henry Norris. That day Mark Smeaton, a musician at court, was invited to visit Thomas Cromwell; but what happened upon his arrival at Cromwell's house is not known. It was said that he was 'grievously racked'; but in any case he had been tortured, under which he not only confessed to sleeping with Anne Boleyn but as well named four other men. Cromwell then sent Smeaton to The Tower and a message to the king at Greenwich.

Henry VIII, accompanied by a few of his men including Sir Henry Norris, immediately left for London without uttering a word to Anne Boleyn. On their way by horse, Henry VIII managed to draw up to Sir Henry Norris and tell him that he had been one of those four other men accused of sleeping with Anne Boleyn. Henry VIII begged him to confess, saying that if he would, and as well give information about other lovers, Norris should go scot-free. Norris was appalled, claiming he was sure of the Queen's innocence and that he would defend her reputation in single-handed combat. He was then sent to The Tower, joined by Sir Francis Weston, William Brereton and Lord Rochford, Anne's brother. They all denied the charges.

On 2 May, Queen Anne Boleyn was informed that she was accused of adultery and that Norris and Smeaton had confessed. However, this trick did not work, for she denied the charges and maintained that no other man had touched her. Nevertheless, she, too, was taken to The Tower.

As none of the four confessed, Cromwell's case against Anne Boleyn was difficult. Smeaton, who had confessed, had been tortured while these four had not. Nevertheless the verdict was inevitable and all five were condemned to be beheaded on Tower Green.

Anne Boleyn's supposed paramours died first, denying guilt to the end. On 17 May 1536, George Boleyn, Lord Rochford, died first after making a speech; Sir Henry Norris made no speech; Sir Francis Weston and William Brereton both professed to die innocently. Mark Smeaton, knowing that if he would proclaim innocence at this stage his death would be slower and more painful, simply said: 'Masters, I pray you all pray for me, for I have deserved the death.'[end quote]1

Henry Norreys 1st Baron Norreys of Rycote was born circa 1525.1
Henry Norreys 1st Baron Norreys of Rycote died on 27 June 1601 at Rycote, Oxfordshire, England.1
; per van de Pas: [quote]Born about 1525, he was M.P. for Berkshire from 1547 till 1552. In 1565 he was Commissioner for musters of horses in county Oxon. On 6 September 1566 he was knighted at Rycote. From 1566 till 1571 he was ambassador to France and chose to reside outside Paris so that, without interference, his messengers could bring him word of everything afoot, even in the Privy Council of the French King. On 7 July 1568 he informed Cecil that the Provost Marshal had warned him that 'the Queen's Majesty did hold the Wolf that wold devower hyr, and that yt ys conspired twixt the King of Spayn, the Pope, and the French King, that Queene's Majesty shuld be destroyed, wherby the Queene of Scotts might succeed hir Majesty'. In March 1569 he was asking for his recall and, on 12 February 1571, left Paris.

From 6 May 1572 he was summoned to Parliament by writs directed at 'Henrico Norrys de Rycott', whereby he is held to have become Lord Norris, and took his seat on the 8th of May. An Act was passed in Parliament for his restoration in blood and restitution to him of his attainted father's estates, 'except such as have been forfeited to the Crown, or were lands of Sir Francis, late Viscount Lovell' was followed by an Act (1576) restoring him in blood.

In or about 1580 he was appointed Porter of the Outer Gate of Windsor Castle and Keeper of the Armoury there. In 1581 he was one of the Lords at the trial of William, Lord Vaux. From 1587 till 1599 he was Lord Lieutenant of the counties Oxon and Berkshire. In July 1588 he was appointed Captain of light horse in the Queen's bodyguard. He was summoned as a peer upon the trial of Philip, Earl of Arundel. On 27 June 1601 he died at Rycote.[end quote]1

     BIRTH     1668, England
DEATH     1729 (aged 60–61), King George County, Virginia, USA
Family legend asserts that he was the brother of Edmund Gibson, Bishop of London. Although both were apparently from the Gibson family of Westmoreland County, England, they were not brothers (more likely, first cousins). Jonathan emigrated to Virginia some time before his 1699 marriage to Elizabeth (Thornton) Conway.
Four offspring of Elizabeth and Jonathan Gibson survived to adulthood. The first, a son also named Jonathan, was born around 1700; then three daughters: Alice (ca. 1707), Sarah (ca. 1711), and Rachel (1717).
Jonathan junior and his older half-brother Francis Conway married sisters Margaret and Rebecca Catlett, daughters of John and Mary (Gaines) Catlett of Essex (now Caroline) County. Alice, the eldest daughter of Elizabeth and Jonathan Gibson married John Catlett 4th, a nephew of Rebecca and Margaret. Rachel Gibson married George Taylor.
Jonathan Gibson 1st died in 1729 in King George County, Virginia, where his will was recorded. (By Mark Hale - unfortunately, because the original biography has been copied & used without giving me credit, this is a version considerably edited by myself.)

Francis Conway, II (1722-1761) In 1744 Francis Conway, II married Sarah Taliaferro (daughter of Charles Taliaferro, Jr. and Sarah Thornton).
Eleanor Rose "Nelly" Conway - (1731-1829). Nelly married Col. James Madison, Sr. Their first chilld was James Madison, who was elected the fourth President of the United States of America and the co-author of the Federalist Papers and Father of the American Constitution.
Catlett Conway, Sr.(1751-1827). Catlett married Susannah Fitzhugh.
Following the death of Francis Conway, Rebecca (Catlett) Conway married John Moore whose will was probated, in King George County, VA in 1749.
Rebecca Catlett (Conway) Moore's will was made 6 Nov., 1759, and was probated 8 March, 1760.
Source for the birthdate of Rebecca Catlett is: Stubbs, Dr. & Mrs. William Carter, "A History of Two Virginia Families, Transplanted from County Kent, England; Thomas Baytop, Tenterden, 1638, and John Catlett, Sittingbourne, 1622.", pg. 18.
Source for the marriage date of Rebecca to Francis Conway: King, George Harrison Sanford, Marriages of Richmond County, VA 1668-1853" Fellow American Society of Genealogists, Fredericksburg, VA, 1964. p. 248.
Further source for Rebecca's possible dob: I would suggest a date of birth for Rebecca much earlier than your 1707. According to the family bible of Francis Thornton 1st who was her husband's grandfather, “Francis Conway was married to Rebecca Catlett the 21 day of October in the year of our Lord 1717 It being a Monday when the Clock struck two in the afternoon. Our first[born] is Catlett Conway & he was born ye 11th January it being on ----- day in the year of our Lord 1719.” With Francis (born 1696) and Rebecca marrying in 1717 and their first child born in 1719, her date of birth would mostly likely have been between 1696 and 1702. Some sources give 1702 (without citation) but I tend to think ca. 1698 is more accurate. Thanks Mark Hale
