"Adolf of Egmond (Grave, February 12, 1438 – Tournai, June 27, 1477) was a Duke of Guelders, Count of Zutphen from 1465–1471 and in 1477.
"He was the son of Arnold, Duke of Guelders and Catherine of Cleves.
"In the battle of succession for Guelders, he imprisoned in 1465 his own father and became Duke with the support of Philip the Good, who also made him Knight in the Order of the Golden Fleece. In 1468 he won the Battle of Straelen against Cleves, but Charles the Bold reinstated his father Arnold, and Adolf was imprisoned in Hesdin. After the death of Charles the Bold in 1477, he was liberated by the Flemish.
"He died the same year at the head of a Flemish army besieging Tournai, after the States of Guelders had recognized him as Duke. His body was buried in Tournai Cathedral.

"Adolf married Catharine of Bourbon (1440–1469), daughter of Charles I, Duke of Bourbon, in 1463. They had twin children :
; Per Genealogics:
"Adolf van Egmond, Duke of Gelre, was born on 12 February 1438, the son of Arnold of Egmond, duke of Gelre and Catharina von Kleef.
"On 28 December 1463 in Brussels he married Catherine de Bourbon, the daughter of Charles I, duc de Bourbon, and Agnes de Bourgogne. They had two children, both of whom would have progeny. Adolf also had six illegitimate children of whom two sons would have progeny.
"In the 1450s Adolf began to play a major role in the political life of Gelre, driven by the differences between his father and the cities of the duchy, which maintained contact with Philippe 'the Good', duke of Burgundy. Encouraged by his mother, he took on the role of heading the opposition against his father. In 1456 Philippe proposed that Arnold be replaced by Adolf, but the cities opposed this. Three years later father and son were still in opposition. Through the intermediation of Willem van Egmond, younger brother of Arnold and his principal counsellor, they reached a reconciliation confirmed by the Treaty of Batenburg (13 October 1459). In its terms Adolf received the command of Nijmegen and its surrounds, as well as of Duffel. Through the following years Adolf allied himself more closely to the Burgundians, in 1461 becoming a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in the 10th chapter at Saint-Omer, and then in 1463 marrying Catherine de Bourbon. He also became the brother-in-law of Charles of Burgundy, as their wives were sisters. It was typical of the situation that his father Arnold did not attend the wedding ceremony.
"On 10 January 1465 Adolf treacherously captured Arnold at Grave and declared himself the new duke. This marked the beginning of the civil war in Gelre in which the supporters of Arnold were led by his brother Willem van Egmond and his sons. Duke Johann I von Kleef, brother-in-law of Arnold, sided with the opposition. Philippe, duke of Burgundy, and his son and Charles attempted to negotiate at the outset, as both Adolf and Johann I were members of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and the statutes of the order forbade its members to make war on each other. At the 11th chapter at Bruges in May 1468, Charles, now duke of Burgundy, called on them to cease all hostilities and submit themselves to his arbitration; he also ordered Adolf to free Arnold. However, Adolf was not willing to relinquish any power to his father, and the conflict continued, interrupted here and there by armistices.
"At the end of 1470 Adolf, who had in the meantime become a widower, arrived at the court of Burgundy to seek a solution with Charles. The latter stipulated that Arnold had to be freed to take part in the discussions, but no compromise could be found between father and son. Adolf attempted to flee, but Charles had him arrested immediately, particularly as he feared the contacts that Adolf had maintained with his enemy Louis XI of France. Adolf was imprisoned at Rupelmonde and then at Courtrai, despite the repeated insistence of the leaders of the Holy Roman Empire that he be released. In December 1472 Arnold pawned the duchy of Gelre to Charles for 300,000 golden Rhine guilders, without recognition of the rights of his son or his grandchildren. After the death of Arnold, Charles conquered the duchy of Gelre in the summer of 1473 and imprisoned the children of Adolf.
"After the unexpected death of Duke Charles 'the Bold' on 5 January 1477 at Nancy, Adolf was freed at the instigation of the Flemish on condition that he did not return to Gelre and did nothing which could act against the interests of the new sovereign, Charles' daughter Marie of Burgundy. His supporters in Gelre meanwhile recognised him as their new duke. However Adolf kept his promises and merely offered his services to Marie in her conflict with Louis XI. He probably hoped thereby to make himself popular with the Flemish and gain their approval for a marriage with Marie, but he was killed 27 June 1477 near Tournai, in a skirmish with French soldiers."6 He was Knight of the Burgundian Order of the Golden Fleece in 1461.6 He was Duke of Gueldres between 1473 and 1477.2,3
