      ; Przybyslaw, Prince of The Obotrites, Prince of The Wenden, -1178, became Christian in 1164. After his father's death, Przybyslaw and his younger brother, Wertislav, together with their families, had to flee, but only after the castle Werle had been burned down. The brothers were hiding in the woods while their families were safe on board a ship. After a while, Heinrich the Lion returned only some of their lands.

In 1163 the brothers tried to recover these but failed and Wertislav was imprisoned, to be kept as hostage to force Przybyslaw to keep the peace. However, on Wertislav's urging, Przybyslaw again attacked a year later and Wertislav was hanged. Przybyslaw first conquered Mecklenburg, then unsuccessfully attacked castle Ilow, after which he captured Malchow.

On 6 July 1164, Przybyslaw and the Wenden were defeated by Saxon forces, and had to flee to Pommern. However, as Heinrich the Lion had earned the enmity of other German princes, he restored Pribislav to most of his paternal inheritance. In 1170 Przybyslaw was described by Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa as 'Prince of Our Empire', and ever since Mecklenburg and the Wenden were regarded as part of the Holy Roman Empire.

Przybyslaw's wife, Woislawa, was a Christian and on her urging he was baptised on 29 April 1164 by Bishop Berno of Schwerin. Przybyslaw founded a monastery for Cistercien monks and a chapel was built on the site where once a heathen holy place had been. (This chapel was restored much later in 1822.) In 1172, Przybyslaw, with Heinrich the Lion, went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He had become so devout a Christian that, in 1168 with King Waldemar of Denmark, the heathen temple of Svantevit in Arkona was destroyed. He endeavoured to restore trade as wars had ended all prosperity in his Duchy. He also rebuilt castles at Mecklenburg, Ilow and Rostock and tried to make the Wenden settle down and give up their nomadic existence.

In 1178 he attended a tournament at Luneburg and was killed by a fall from his horse.¹
