Otto the Evil was a member of the House of Guelph. He was a Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg from 1367 Duke in the Principality of Göttingen. He was the son of Ernest I and Elisabeth von Hesse. Otto's contemporaries called him der Quade, which is Low German for "the evil". He received this nickname due to the almost unbroken series of feuds he was involved in. Otto has been described as a prominent representative of the former knighthood. He often allied himself with noble Knights to fight against other princes or against the cities, whose burgeoning power was anathema to him. During these clashes, Otto often changed sides. Sometimes, he fought several feuds simultaneously.
The final verdict on Otto I is negative, because he overestimated his powers and left himself weakened when he fought too many fights at once. He left a heavily indebted and politically disorganized country to his only son, Otto II.
In 1379, he married Margarete, a daughter of Duke William VII of Jülich-Berg.

"OTTO von Braunschweig-Göttingen ([1330/40]-Hardegsen 13 Dec 1394, bur Wiebrechtshausen). Botho’s Chronicon Brunsvicensium Picturatum names “Otto...de Böse” as the son of “Hertoghe Ernest, Hertoghen Albrechtes sone to Brunswick, ein Hertoghe...to Gotting” and his wife “des Hertoghen dochter van dem Sagen...Barbara”[331]. As noted above, the accuracy of this information identifying Otto’s mother is uncertain. The date of Otto’s first marriage suggests that he may have been born a few years before the only known date which records his father’s wife “Adelheid”, a speculative suggestion. This doubtful situation suggests that the identity of Otto’s mother is best shown as uncertain. He succeeded his father in 1366 as OTTO "der Quade" Herzog von Braunschweig in Göttingen. Botho’s Chronicon Brunsvicensium Picturatum records the death in 1394 of “Hertoghe Otto over Wolt to Gottingh”[332].

; Per Genealogics:
"Otto, known as 'der Quade' (the Evil) was born about 1340, the eldest son of Ernst, Herzog von Braunschweig-Göttingen, and Elisabeth von Hessen. After several years of co-rule, in 1367 Otto took over the rule of this small and economically weak Welf principality. He resided first in the city of Göttingen, where he held several large jousting tournaments. However he fell out markedly with its citizens.
"Otto earned his epithet through his almost unbroken series of feuds throughout his reign. Otto was a prominent representative of the noble knighthood of his time. He often allied himself with the knights in battles against other princes or the towns, whose growing power was a thorn in his side. Otto frequently pursued a number of these feuds simultaneously.
"From 1367, for example, he pursued inheritance rights to the county of Hessen and attempted to enforce them militarily in alliance with the knights of the 'Sternerbund' (a confederation of knights in the Hessen area). At the same time he participated in the Lüneburg Succession War. He first fought on the side of his first cousin Magnus II Torquatus, Herzog von Braunschweig-Lüneburg, against the Ascanians. Later he was able to secure the rule over the whole of Braunschweig for the period 1374-1381, but both ventures ended unsuccessfully and Otto had to withdraw in exchange for financial compensation.
"About 1357 Otto married Miroslawa, Gräfin von Holstein-Plön, daughter of Johann III, Graf von Holstein-Plön und Kiel, and Miroslawa, Gräfin von Schwerin. This marriage remained without issue and Miroslawa died about 1376. In 1379 Otto married Margarete von Jülich, daughter of Wilhelm II-VII, Herzog von Berg und Jülich, and Anna, Pfalzgräfin bei Rhein. Of their four children Otto, Elisabeth and Anna would have progeny.
"In 1387 Otto tried to impose his will in the city of Göttingen, but with little success. In April that year the citizens stormed his castle inside the city walls, and in retaliation Otto devastated villages and properties in the area. However in July the citizens, under the city governor Moritz von Uslar, won a pitched battle between Rosdorf and Grone over Otto's army. In August 1387 Otto was forced to recognise the freedom of Göttingen properties in the area.
"After he was expelled from Göttingen, Otto lived in Hardegsen, where he had acquired the castle of Hardeg from the lords of Rosdorf. He died there on 13 December 1394. As he had been excommunicated for unrecorded reasons, he was buried in unhallowed ground north of the abbey church of Wiebrechtshausen near Northeim. He was later posthumously released from excommunication, and a chapel affiliated with the church was built over his grave."11
