Niklot (?) Prince of the Obotrites1

M, #64131, b. circa 1100, d. August 1160
Last Edited9 Aug 2004
Niklot (?) Prince of the Obotrites was born circa 1100.1
Niklot (?) Prince of the Obotrites died in August 1160; killed in battle.1,2
; Niklot, Prince of The Obotrites, -1160. Surrounded by Christians, Niklot and his tribe, the Wenden, had remained faithful to the old religion. In 1147, before Emperor Konrad II, Bernard of Clairvaux wanted to prepare the Empire for a crusade to the Middle East. However, the German princes were not prepared to go while there were still infidels living within Germany. Bernard of Clairvaux decided the Southern German princes should go on the crusade while the northern German princes would attack the Wenden.

Heinrich the Lion of Saxony and Albrecht of Brandenburg set out with their armies towards the Wenden. However, they were forewarned; so secretly they prepared a fleet and, on 26 June 1147, conquered and plundered the city of Lubeck, killing more than 3,000 people. Rich with their booty, they returned home to await their attackers.

The 'crusaders' approached by land under the Duke of Saxony with a fleet of Danish ships giving them support as well as hoping to prevent the Wenden from escaping by sea. Niklot asked the citizens of the city of Rugen for support and, when they attacked, the Danish fleet was almost entirely lost while the remainder hurried home. The Saxons besieged the castle Dobin which, being built in a marsh, was almost unassailable.

After Niklot promised to free the captured Danes and allow Christian missionaries into Mecklenburg, Heinrich the Lion was only too happy to retreat. Albrecht of Brandenburg together with his 60,000 crusaders destroyed the castle Malchow with its heathen temple and besieged the city of Demmin; but after three months he had to retreat and return to Brandenburg.

In 1159 Niklot promised Heinrich the Lion to keep the peace with the Danes and Saxons while Heinrich went to Italy to be with the Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa. However, small bands intruded into Denmark after which the Danish king Waldemar, together with Heinrich the Lion, attacked the Wenden and Waldemar captured the castle of Rostock. Niklot, concentrating on the defence, sacrificed the castles of Schwerin, Dobin, Mecklenburg and Ilow by putting them to fire and retreating to Werle. Niklot was killed in a small skirmish and his death meant the end of the independence of the Wenden.1

Last Edited30 Oct 2020
Udo I (?) Markgraf von der Lausitz was born circa 935.4
Udo I (?) Markgraf von der Lausitz died on 13 March 993.5
Udo I (?) Markgraf von der Lausitz was buried after 13 March 993 at Kloster Nienburg an der Saale, Nienburg/Saale, Salzlandkreis, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany.5
      ; Per Genealogics:
"Udo was the margrave of the Saxon Ostmark from 965 until his death. He may have been the son of Hidda, sister of Gero I 'the Great' (c.900 - 20 May 965), and Christian of Thüringen. Udo held the county of Scrimuntgau which Thietmar I of Meissen, a known son of Hidda, had held. He was buried in Nienburg, a monastic foundation of Thietmar's. This too provides evidence of their probable relationship.
"In 965 Gero 'the Great', a likely uncle of Udo, died and his great march, the _marca Geronis,_ was divided into five smaller marches. Udo received the so-called _marca Orientalis_ or Eastern March. Udo was also later granted the countship of the region of Nizizi. He first appeared with the title _marchio_ (margrave) only in 974, though he had held marcher territories (officially as a county) since 965. In that same year (974), Udo was made count of Nordthüringau.
"Udo made war on Mieszko I Dagon, grand duke of Poland, but Emperor Otto I, from his seat in far-off Southern Italy, ordered Udo and Mieszko to cease until he himself could arbitrate their dispute. The chronicler Thietmar, bishop of Merseburg, relates that Udo's reputation with Mieszko was such that the duke of Poland 'would not have dared while wearing his fur coat to enter a house where he knew the margrave to be, or to remain seated when the margrave stood up.' In 979 (or 972) Udo, intending to compel Mieszko to pay tribute for the territory between the Oder and the Warthe, invaded that region, but was defeated on 24 June 979 (or 972) at the Battle of Cedynia.
"Udo died on 13 March 992. He left a son Siegfried who became a monk at Nienburg but left the monastery on his father's death to claim his inheritance. In this he failed, though he was a count in 1018 and he allied with Mieszko II Lambert, king of Poland, in 1030. Udo also left a daughter Hidda who would have progeny, marrying Adalbert von Ballenstedt."4

; Per Med Lands:
"DO [Odo] (-13 Mar 993, bur Kloster Nienburg an der Saale[89]). Jackman suggests that Markgraf Hodo was a son of Markgraf Christian and his wife Hidda[90]. The onomastics are favourable. The common countship of Gau Serimunt between Markgraf Thietmar, son of Christian, and Hodo, as well as the latter's burial in the former's foundation suggest a close relationship. "Otto…rex" donated property "Huodo in beneficium habet in pago Helmingouue in comitatu Willihelmi comitis" to the church of Magdeburg by charter dated 29 Jul 961[91], but it is not known whether this refers to the same Hodo. "Otto…rex" granted property "in pago Serimunt in comitatu Thetmari comitis" to Rihpert Bishop of Brixen on the intervention of "Huotonis comitis" by charter dated 15 Oct 967[92]. Markgraf der Ostmark 965. Graf im Gau Nizizi after 9 Aug 966. "Otto…imperator augustus" granted property "predium Chotirodizi…in pago Northuringa in comitatu Huodonis comitis" to Magdeburg St Moritz by charter dated 1 Dec 971[93]. Markgraf 974. "Otto…imperator augustus" confirmed donations of property "Rosburg in pago Sirimunti in comitatu Huodonis marchionis" to the church of Magdeburg by charter dated 16 Jun 974[94]. Graf im Nordthüringau 974. Markgraf Hodo attacked Mieszko I Prince of Poland but was defeated by him at Zehden [Cydyna] 24 Jun 972[95]. "Otto…rex" donated property "Vvalbisci in comitatu Karoli comitis" to Quedlinburg by charter dated 6 Jan 992, which names as present "Bernhardi ducis, Egberti comitis, Eggihardi marchionis, Herimanni palatini comitis, Huodonis marchionis, Deoderici palatini comitis eiusque fratris Sigeberti comitis, Herimanni comitis"[96]. The necrology of Lüneburg records the death "13 Mar" of "Hodo marchio"[97].

"[EMMA . "Emma Francorum regis filia et regis Eadbaldi copula" subscribed her husband's 618 charter[369]. Although Emma seems an unlikely name for a Merovingian princess, given the more complex names which are typical of the family, Settipani suggests that it is the diminutive of a name containing a root similar to "Ermen-", like Ermenberga or Ermentrudis, which would also provide an explanation for the root "Eormen-" in the name of her son[370]. Stenton says[371] there seems no doubt that Eadbald's second wife belonged to the Frankish royal house but that her parentage has not been ascertained. Werner suggests[372] that she was the daughter of Erchinoald, maior domus of Neustria, as the name root "Eorcen-" (similar to "Erchin-") was used among her descendants. Settipani[373] identifies Emma's parents as shown here, seemingly because he eliminates all other possible couples from the known members of the Merovingian royal family from a chronological viewpoint. He prefers a Merovingian ancestry to explain the name "Hlothhere" given to Emma's grandson, similar to "Chlothachar" or "Clotaire", the name of Emma's supposed father.

"ÆTHELBERHT, son of EORMENRIC King of Kent & his wife --- (after [550]-24 Feb 616, bur Canterbury, Church of St Peter and St Paul). Bede records that "Aedilbert tex Cantuariorum" was "filius Irminrici"[264]. He succeeded his father as ÆTHELBERHT I King of Kent, the dating of the event being discussed above in relation to his father's death. In the early years of his reign according to Bede, he was "defeated in two battles, he could scarcely defend his frontier" but in the later years "subjugated every kingdom of the Angles, with the exception of the Northumbrians"[265]. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that "Ceawlin and Cutha" fought against "Æthelberht" [King of Kent] in 568 and "drove him into Kent", and "slew two princes Oslaf and Cnebba at Wibbandun"[266]. Bede records that "rex Aedilberct in Cantia" had extended his authority as far as the river Humber when Augustine landed at Thanet island, Kent[267]. Bede records that the king’s royal court was at Canterbury ("in civitate Doruuernensi"), where Augustine was allowed to settle after the king eventually allowed him to leave Thanet[268]. King Æthelberht converted to Christianity, the first of the Anglo-Saxon kings to do so, presumably some time before 601, the date of the letter from Pope Gregory I welcoming him to the Christian faith[269]. Bede quotes the text of this letter, dated "X Kal Jul" in the nineteenth year of the reign of Emperor Mauricius (601), addressed to "Aedilbercto regi Anglorum"[270]. Yorke suggests[271] that the king's conversion by the Papal representative, rather than by his first wife's Frankish bishop Liudhard, represented an assertion of his independence from Frankish control. Augustine established his see at Canterbury, a second see being founded at Rochester in 604 with Justus as bishop, and a third in London at St Paul's under Mellitus. He promulgated laws, similar in form to the lex salica of Clovis King of the Franks, which represent the earliest body of law in any Germanic language. He granted land at Rochester to the church in a charter dated 28 Apr 604[272], the oldest surviving Anglo-Saxon charter. Bede records the death in 616 "twenty one years after Augustine was sent to England" of "Aedilbert tex Cantuariorum" after a reign of 56 years, the third king who had authority over the southern provinces, adding in a later passage that he died 24 Feb twenty one years after converting to Christianity and was buried "in portico sancti Martini intro ecclesiam beatorum apostolorum Petri et Pauli" where "Berctæ regina" was buried[273]. Assuming that the generally accepted date of 597 for St Augustine's landing is correct, both references are overstated. The Annales Lindisfarnenses et Cantuarienses record the death "618 VI Kal Mar" of "filius rex Edilbert Cantioriorum Irminrici"[274].
"m firstly ([580]) BERTA of the Franks, daughter of CHARIBERT King of the Franks & his first wife Ingelberge ([before 560]-[601/before 616], bur Canterbury, Church of St Peter and St Paul). Gregory of Tours records that the daughter of King Charibert and his wife Ingoberg "eventually married a man from Kent and went to live there"[275]. Bede records that "rex Aedilberct in Cantia" had "uxorem…Christianam de gente Francorum regia…Bercta" whom he had received "a parentibus" on condition she retained her religion[276]. It is reasonable to assume that Berta was born before 560, given the subsequent marital history of her father, who died in 567 having married three times after repudiating his first wife, although it is possible that some if not all his marriages were polygamous. Already a Christian when she came to England, she was accompanied by Liudhard, a Frankish bishop[277], although if he attempted to convert her husband his efforts must have been unsuccessful in view of the king’s later conversion by St Augustine. Kirby suggests that the marriage took place in [580] after analysing the various contradictory chronological indications in contemporary sources[278]. According to Bede, as noted above, King Æthelberht received Bertha "a parentibus". As her father died in 567, and her mother in 589, the text if taken literally means that she married before 567, although this seems unlikely. The word "parents" may in this context mean "relatives" more broadly. Queen Bertha is named in Pope Gregory I's letter of 601 to her husband[279]. Bede records the burial of "Aedilbert tex Cantuariorum" in "portico sancti Martini intro ecclesiam beatorum apostolorum Petri et Pauli" stating that this was where "Berctæ regina" was buried[280].
"m secondly (after 601), as her first husband, --- (-after [618]). The name of the second wife of King Æthelberht is not known. According to William of Malmesbury[281], she was "another Frankish princess" but no corroboration has been found for this. She married secondly, as his first wife, her stepson Eadbald King of Kent after the death of King Æthelberht, but was repudiated (see below). Her second marriage is confirmed by Bede who records that "filius eius Eadbald" succeeded as king after the death of "Aedilbercti", adding that he refused to embrace Christianity and was also "fornicatione pollutus" because he had "uxorem patris", adding in a later passage that her husband was persuaded to repudiate her when he was converted to Christianity[282]."
