Sir William Heron Knt., of Cornhill, Northumberland was born on 8 November 1400.1,2 He married Anne/Elizabeth Ogle, daughter of Sir Robert Ogle Knt., of Ogle, Northumberland and Maud de Grey, on 13 January 1412
; per van de Pas "date is of contract or similar"; her 1st husband.1,3,2
Sir William Heron Knt., of Cornhill, Northumberland died on 1 September 1425 at age 24.1,2
; van de Pas cites: The Complete Peerage, 1936 , Doubleday, H.A. & Lord Howard de Walden, Reference: VI 487; dates Chris Phillips.1
; per van de Pas: [quote] In 1404 William Heron, a minor, son and heif of William Heron is mentioned as holding his lands in the barony of Wooler by knight service. By 1415 the yung heir was not only of age but had received knighthood and was then the owner of Ford Castle. He was sheriff of Northumberland in 1424.
A quarrel with his neighbour John Manners of Etal, culminated in an attack by Heron on Etal castle where there was 'great assault in shooting of arrows (and) striking with swords.' Heron and his servant Robert Atkinson were both killed, and Elizabeth Heron the widow claimed against John Manners the payment of her husband's debt of 666 pounds and the cost of the legal proceedings consequent on his death of 1`37 pounds 5 shilling and 3 pence. She also demanded that Manners should have the king's hand removed from the land of the heir who was a minor, alleging that the wardship had been claimed by the Crown 'by the procuring, stirring and assent of the said John Manners and his friends.'
Although arbitrators were appointed on both sides, no settlement was reached until the priors of Durham and Tynemouth were asked to adjudicate. They issued their award on 31 September 1431 which was to the effect that Manners and his associates should on an appointed day at Newcastle 'lawfully submit them with words and deeds of humbleness and submission'; Manners was to have 500 masses sung within the year for the repose of the soul of William Heron and pay the widow 250 marks, one hundred of which were to be devoted to masses for the soul of Atkinson. It would appear that even this decision did not finally settle the matter as some time later Manners complained that he had to pay for 800 masses. It is obvious that only the church financially benefitted from its own decision.' Brad Verity quoting Hedley. [end quote]1
