; Per Med Lands:
"WALRAM [II] “Paganus” van Limburg, son of HENDRIK [I] Graaf van Limburg, Duke of Lower Lotharingia & his [second] wife Adelheid von Botenstein ([1080/85]-6 Aug 1139). The Genealogica ex Stirpe Sancti Arnulfi records "Henricus de Liemborc, pater Pagani de Arluna" as son of son of "Adela soror Friderici ducis...filiam unam” (sister of “Fulconem et Gallerannum”)[56]. The Annalista Saxo names "Walrabonum ducem qui et Paginus dicebatur" as son of "Heinricus dux de Lintburh" and his wife Adelheid von Botenstein[57]. According to Europäische Stammtafeln[58], Waleran and his siblings were children of his father's first marriage. The primary source on which this is based has not yet been identified. It is possible that it is only speculative because Waleran inherited the county of Arlon, although this would not be the only case of property passing from an individual's first wife to the children of his second marriage (for example the inheritance of the county of Hainaut by Baudouin de Flandre, second husband of Richilde whose first husband was Herman Comte de Hainaut, see the document HAINAUT). Until further evidence comes to light, it is considered preferable to accept the report in the Annalista Saxo. It should also be noted that the parents of Adelheid von Botenstein, Graf Hendrik's [second] wife, allegedly married in 1056 (see BAVARIA NOBILITY), which suggests that their daughter may have been born soon after this date. If this is correct, it would be consistent with Graf Walram [II] having been born in [1085]. Comte d'Arlon: Bruno Archbishop of Trier donated property “in Liemena” to Trier by charter dated 1115, witnessed by “...Walrammus comes de Arlo...”[59]. Graaf van Limburg. Avocat de Saint-Trond [Sep 1124/1127] (the earlier date being the last document in which his predecessor Giselbert Comte de Duras is called avocat): “advocato Gualeramno cognomento Pagino et subadvocato Gillberto...” witnessed the charter dated 1127 under which Etienne Bishop of Metz donated property to Saint-Trond[60]. "Gerardus de Gelre, Arnoldus comes de Berge, Waleramus comes de Lemburg, Gerardus comes de Iuliaco…" signed the charter dated 1127 under which Friedrich Archbishop of Köln donated property to Kloster St Martin, Köln[61]. Friedrich [I] Archbishop of Köln founded a church "in castro meo episcopali…Zulpiacum" by charter dated 1124 witnessed by "Paganus comes, Theodericus comes de Ara, Herimannus de Hengebach, Theodericus et frater eius Adelgerus de Gladebach…"[62]. The Gestorum Abbatem Trudonensium records that he was installed as WALERAN Duke of Lower Lotharingia by Emperor Lothar in 1128[63]. The necrology of Stavelot records the deaths "XVII Kal Aug" of "Walrani duci…dna Judith juge sua"[64].
"m ([1107/10]) JUTTA von Wassenberg, daughter of GERHARD [I] "Flaminius" Graf von Wassenberg & his [first wife ---] ([1087]-Rolduc 24 Jun 1151, bur Rolduc [Rode] abbey). Heiress of Wassenberg. The Chronicon Hanoniense records that "Balduinus comes Hanoniensis" married "Yolendem…comitis de Ghelra filiam", and that "aliam…eiusdem comitis de Ghelra filiam" married "Henricus dux de Lemborch" who inherited "castrum Wassemberghe" from her, a later passage adding that the father of the daughters was "comitis de Ghelra Gerardi"[65]. The chronology dictates that her husband was Walram [II] Graaf van Limburg not Hendrik. The Annales Rodenses record that in 1151 “Jutta ducissa, Walrami ducis de Leimburch uxor et Heinrici ejusdem ducis filii mater” donated “ecclesie...apud Lomunsheim” to Rolduc [Rode] abbey, died “VIII Kal Jul” and was buried in the abbey[66]. Henri Bishop of Liège confirmed the donations made by "domina Jutta, nobilissima matrona uxor ducis Walrami de Lemburg" to Rolduc [Rode] abbey, with the consent of "filiis suis Domino Henrico et Gerardo" by charter dated 1151, which records the presence at her burial in Rolduc [Rode] of "filii eiusdem Henricus et Gerardus et filiolus Domini Heinrici, eiusdem nominis, Arnoldus quoque filius Ruberti comitis de Lunneburg natus ex domina Beatrice filia præfatæ dominæ, et Theodericus filius Ekberti comitis de Titkelenburg natus ex alia filia"[67]. The necrology of Stavelot records the deaths "XVII Kal Aug" of "Walrani duci…dna Judith juge sua"[68]. The Chronicle of Rolduc records the death of Jutta 24 Jun 1151[69]."

; Per Genealogics:
"Walram III was born about 1085, the son of Heinrich I, Graf von Limburg. Called 'Paganus' (the Pagan), probably due to a late baptism, he was duke of Limburg and count of Arlon from his father's death in about 1119 until his own twenty years later.
"About 1100 he married Judith van Wassenberg, heiress of Wessenberg, daughter of Gerhard I Flaminius, count of Gelre, count of Wassenberg, and Clémence de Poitou, heiress of Gleiberg. Their son Heinrich and daughter Margaretha would have progeny.
"He was given the duchy of Lower Lorraine by Lothar von Supplinburg, duke of Saxony, after the latter's accession as King of the Germans in 1125.
"Walram's father Heinrich had been forced to yield the duchy to Godfried I, comte de Louvain, on the succession of Heinrich V as emperor, but had kept the ducal title. With the coming of Lothar von Supplinburg, Godfried was forced to yield the duchy to Walram. Godfried was not willing to do so and war broke out, especially over disputes about authority over the abbey of Sint-Truiden. In 1129 Walram and the bishop of Liège, Alexandre de Juliers, destroyed Godfried's forces at Wilde. His rule was actual from there on. Though Walram and Godfried eventually reconciled, Godfried maintained the ducal title, as Heinrich had.
"In 1129 Walram was made master of the forest of Duisburg. In 1139 Emperor Lothar von Supplinburg died and Walram supported Konrad III von Schwaben, Herzog von Franken, who was elected King of the Germans. He remained faithful to the new king until his death shortly thereafter on 6 August 1139. He was succeeded in Lorraine by Godfried II, comte de Louvain, son of Godfried I, and in Limburg by his son Heinrich II."7 GAV-24 EDV-24.

GAV-31. Wichmann II 'the Elder' (?) Count of Engern was also known as Wichman von Stubenskorn.4

; Per Med Lands:
"WICHMANN [II], son of BILLUNG & his wife --- (-23 Apr 944). Widukind names "Wichmanni fratris sui [=Herimannum]", when recording his rebellion against King Otto[261]. "Otto…rex" granted property "in pago Vnimoti in comitatu Wigmanni dua loca Vrlaha et Ottingha" for the foundation of Magdeburg by charter dated 11 Oct 937[262]. He rebelled against Otto I King of Germany in 938, dissatisfied that the king had given military command in Saxony to his brother Hermann, but made peace with the king later the same year[263]. The Annales Magdeburgenses record the reconciliation of "Wigmannus frater Hermanni Saxonis ducis" and the king in 941[264]. The necrology of Fulda records the death in 944 of "Wigman com"[265]. The necrology of Lüneburg records the death "23 Apr" of "Wigmam com"[266].
"m FREDERUNA, daughter of Graf THEODERICH [Immedinger] & his wife Reginlind --- (-18 Jan 971). Her origin is deduced from Thietmar referring to "Counts Wichmann and Ekbert…brothers" as sons of Emperor Otto I's maternal aunt[267], although he does not name their mother. A list of names in the Libri Confraternitatum Sancti Galli sets out (in order) "Thieterich, Reginhilt, *, Oto, Amalrat, Perectheid, Friderun, Pia", immediately after a list of family members of Heinrich I King of Germany and his wife, which no doubt refers to the latter's parents and sisters[268]. It is also possible that the wife of Wichmann [I] was the sister Bia, unless she can be identified as the mother of Friedrich (see above). The necrology of Fulda records the death "970 Id Jan" of "Fridarun comitissa [anc Christi]"[269], presumably showing that she became a nun before she died. "

Ekbert 'der Einäugige' (?) Graf im Hastfalagau died on 4 April 994.3
      ; Per Med Lands:
"[EKBERT [I] "der Einäugige" ([930/35]-4 Apr 994). No direct proof has been found that Ekbert [I] was the son of Wichmann [II] but the chronology is favorable. However, it is clear that he was the brother of Wichmann [III], as Thietmar refers to "Counts Wichmann and Ekbert…brothers" instigating the Slavs to war[282]. His birth date range is estimated on the assumption that he was of a similar age to Liudolf, son of Emperor Otto I, when he joined Liudolf's rebellion. Ekbert lost an eye in a battle for which he blamed Emperor Otto I[283]. "Otto…rex" confirmed the immunities of Kloster Essen including over land "excepta in loco Ruoldinghus quam Eggihart et eius coniunx Rikilt" possessed by hereditary right and in land "in comitatu Ecberti et Cobbonis" by charter dated 15 Jan 947[284], although Ekbert [I] would have been rather young at that date for this to be the same person. Thietmar records that "Count Ekbert" joined the rebellion of Liudolf, son of Emperor Otto I[285], dated from other sources to [953/54]. "Otto…imperator augustus" made a donation to St Pantaleon at Köln of property "insule medietatem in Almere que Urch vocatur…quod Gardolfus iam quondam comes…tenuisse…in comitatu Ekberti comitis" by an undated charter, dated to 966[286]. Thietmar records that "Count Ekbert" was tried for complicity in the rebellion of Heinrich Duke of Bavaria and sent into exile[287], dated to 978. In a later passage, the same chronicler records that Count Ekbert was present with Duke Heinrich when the latter kidnapped King Otto III and that subsequently the king's sister Adelheid was held at Ekbert's fortress of Ala[288]. Graf im Hastfalagau. "Otto…rex" donated property "Vvalbisci in comitatu Karoli comitis" to Quedlinburg by charter dated 6 Jan 992, which names as present "Bernhardi ducis, Egberti comitis, Eggihardi marchionis, Herimanni palatini comitis, Huodonis marchionis, Deoderici palatini comitis eiusque fratris Sigeberti comitis, Herimanni comitis"[289], Ekbert's position as second in the list of nobles indicating his importance at the time. The necrology of Fulda records the death in 994 of "Egbertus com"[290]. The necrology of Lüneburg records the death "4 Apr" of "Ekbert com"[291].
"m ---. The name of Ekbert's wife is not known.] Ekbert & his wife had [six possible children]. No direct proof has been found that the following are children of Ekbert but this is probable. That Ekbert had surviving sons is shown by the charter of "Otto tercius…Romanorum imperator augustus" dated 23 Jan 1001 which donates property "castellum Dalehem…in pago Hastfala sive Ambargam in comitatu filiorum Ekbrahti comitis et nepotis nostri" to the church of Hildesheim[292]. The relationship of "nepos" to Emperor Otto III would have been a remote one through Ekbert's supposed mother Friderun, who was the sister of Emperor Otto's paternal great-grandmother."

There is no proof that Bruno von Braunschweig was the son of Ekbert "der Einäugige" but this appears probable in view of the names which are common to the two families and also the common references to the Derlingau. Bruno is shown in Europäische Stammtafeln as the brother of Wichmann [III] Graf im Duffelgau and Ekbert Graf im Derlingau, while another table shows Wichmann [III] as son of Ekbert[12]. His birth date range is estimated from his estimated marriage date. The estimated birth date ranges of both Wichmann [III] and Bruno are consistent with their having been brothers. Bruno founded Braunschweig. He was a candidate for the German throne in 1002[13] in opposition to Heinrich IV Duke of Bavaria, who was elected as Heinrich II King of Germany.

DEATH     1038 (aged 27–28), Milan, Città Metropolitana di Milano, Lombardia, Italy
Herman IV was the Duke of Swabia. He was the second son of Ernest I and Gisela of Swabia. Herman became duke in 1030 following the death of his older brother Ernest II. He married to Adelaide of Susa, the marchioness of Turin, in January 1037. In July of the next year, while campaigning with Conrad in Southern Italy, he was struck down by an epidemic near Naples. He was buried in Cattedrale di San Vigilio (Trento Cathedral) because the summer heat made it impossible to bring the corpse back to Germany
Adelaide remarried to Henry of Montferrat.

“Hermann was born about 1007, the son of Ernst, Herzog von Schwaben, and Gisela von Schwaben. After the death of his father, his mother married first Bruno of Brunswick, then Emperor Konrad II. Hermann's elder brother Ernst was considered to be too rebellious to be entrusted with the duchy of Schwaben (Swabia), so his mother induced her husband the emperor to appoint Hermann IV as duke. This was done at Ingelheim on 29 March 1030. About 1036 Hermann married Adelaide de Susa. Adelaide's father had died in 1034, her mother intervened to ensure that Hermann also received the Susa inheritance. He joined his stepfather Emperor Konrad II on crusade, but on 28 July 1038 he died in Italy of the plague.
“Herman did not have any legitimate children as he was on campaign for much of his short marriage to Adelaide, and thus died without heirs.”.3

; NB: There is no clear agreement between my main "tertiary" sources of information regarding the descent of Gebhard I. However, the four following sources provide various pieces of a descent:

I. Genealogy.EU (Babenberg) - This descent is clear, but is not supported by any sources:
1. Duke Hermann IV of Swabia (1030-38), *1015, +Trento 28.7.1038; m.Adelheid of Susa (*1015 +19.12.1091) dau.of Mgve Odelrico Menfredo II of Susa, Mkgf of Turin by Berthe von Este

5. Gf Gebhard III von Sulzbach, *1114, +28.10.1188, bur Kastl; m.Mathilde Welf (+16.3.1183)

Genealogics - No father is shown for Gebhard I and the descent from him is shown as follows:
1. Gebhard I, Graf von Sulzbach [1] b. Est 1040 m. NN
2. Adelheid von Sulzbach [1.1] d. 1090 m. Heinrich II, Graf von Formbach

III. Med Lands - This is a more fragmented descent in that, while the individuals are listed, their parent/child connections are not shown or are shown as uncertain. The following generations are shown , with ">>>" indicating no connection shown, though the individuals are listed:
1. NN m. Adelheid LNU 9d aft 28 Nov 1043)
2. Gebhard I (d aft 1085) m. ?
>>>>>>
3. Gebhard II (d. 1085) m. Irmgard von Rott
4. Berengar III (1080-3 Dec 1125) m1. Adelheid von Lechsgemünd m2. Adelheid von von Wolfratshausen
5. Gebhard III (d. 28 Oct 1188) m. Mathilde of Bavaria

Med Lands offers a few comments on the uncertainties:
     1. Re father of Gebhard I: "Wegener assumes that Adelheid was the widow of Hermann IV Duke of Swabia[1817]. He presumably bases this assumption on a creative interpretation of the 14th century Deutsche Reimchronik of Kloster Kastel which records that Ernst Duke of Swabia (presumably indicating Duke Ernst I, father of Duke Hermann IV) had “ain Suen...Gebhardus...Sultzpach”[1818]. No other primary source has been found which indicates any family relationship between the Babenberger dukes of Swabia and the Grafen von Sulzbach. It is suggested that the Deutsche Reimchronik represents a fantasised version of the connection. In any case, Adelaida di Susa, widow of Duke Hermann IV, was married to Enrico di Monferrato in [early 1042] and in two charters dated the following year is recorded in northern Italy (see the document SWABIA DUKES). It is unlikely therefore that she would have been recorded as holding property in the Bavarian Nordgau around the same time. In addition, if Gebhard had been her son it is likely that he would have claimed the duchy of Swabia at some point."

[1818] Moritz (1833), Vol. II, Zweite Beilage, Deutsche Reimchronik des Klosters Kastel, p. 128, lines 147-54.

     2. Re relationship between Gebhard I and Gebhard 2: "Wegener identifies Gebhard [I] with Gebhard who is named as Graf von Sulzbach in 1071, who is shown below as Gebhard [II][1820]. If that is correct, Gebhard [II]’s marriage to Irmgard von Rott must have been his second marriage."
