“Dirk was born about 1114, the son of Floris II 'the Fat', count of Holland and Geertruid of Lorraine, who called herself Petronella after her marriage. He was about seven when his father died, and his mother acted as regent. Petronella supported the uprising of her half-brother Lothar von Supplinburg, duke of Saxony, against Emperor Heinrich V. Lothar became German king in 1125, and gave Leiden and its surroundings (officially a part of the bishopric of Utrecht) to the county of Holland.
“As a very young count, Dirk was confronted with an uprising from the West-Friesians who were supported by his younger brother Floris. Though he defeated them in the winter of 1131, the struggle continued for almost another year. On 26 October 1132 his brother Floris was killed, aged just seventeen.
“As Dirk received the support of his uncle Lothar von Supplinburg, Holy Roman Emperor since 1133, he was able to add the Rijnland to his county. Dirk and his mother supported the monasteries of Egmond and Rijnsburg, which flourished in this period. Monks began to work as officials for the count, because they could write and read.
“Before 1137, Dirk married Sophia von Rheineck, daughter of Otto I, Graf von Rheineck and Gertrude von Northeim, Pfalzgräfin, heiress of Friesland. Dirk and Sophia had ten children, but only two are recorded as having progeny: Floris III who would succeed his father, and Otto IV.
“Dirk went on a crusade to the Holy Land in 1139. He died on 5 August 1157.”.7

Count of Frisia and Holland. Dirk was the eldest son of Floris I, the Count of Holland and Gertude of Saxony, the daughter of Bernard II, Duke of Saxony.
Dirk's father was killed in an ambush when Dirk was under age, but he succeeded his father with his mother as regent. The Bishop of Utrecht, William I, had the Emperor Henry VI confirm territory William had taken from young Dirk was indeed William's, the charters dated April 30, 1064 and May 2, 1064. That left Dirk in possession of only the lands west of the Vlie and around the mouths of the Rhine. Gertrude withdrew with her son to the Frisian islands, Zeeland, leaving William to occupy his stolen territories.
In 1063 Gertrude married Robert of Flanders, the second son of Baldwin V of Flanders, who gave Dirk the Imperial Flanders, including the islands of Frisia west of the Frisian Scheldt, and became Dirk's guardian, and in his own right and that of his step-son, the rightful ruler of all Frisia.
Dirk's brother, Baldwin VI died in 1070, his son, Arnulf, was to be under Robert's guardianship, but his widowed sister-in-law, Richilde, Countess of Mons and Hainaut, fought the claim until Arnulf was killed and Richilde captured during Robert's victory at Cassel February 1071.
Meanwhile, the Pope excommunicated the Emperor Henry IV who was supported by Bishop Utrecht, the people tried to regain the territories taken by Utrecht but were subdued by an army sent by Henry IV and led by the hunchback Godfrey IV, Duke of Lower Lorraine. In 1076 both Godfrey (murdered) and Utrecht died, leaving Dirk to control his own estates at long last. Dirk and his step-father raised an army to take back the properties and arrest Utrecht's successor. The Bishop escaped persecution by surrendering all his disputed lands.
Dirk V was succeeded by his son, Floris II, and was buried in the Egmond Abbey alongside his ancestors.

“Dirk was born about 1053. In 1061 he succeeded his murdered father Floris I, under the guardianship of his mother Gertrud of Saxony. Willem, bishop of Utrecht, took advantage of the young ruler, annexing the county of Holland to his already extensive bishopric of Utrecht. Willem's claim was confirmed by two charters of Emperor Heinrich IV (of 30 April 1064 and 2 May 1064). Dirk only retained possession of lands west of the Vlie and around the mouths of the Rhine.
“Gertrud and her son withdrew to the islands of Friesia (Zeeland), leaving Willem to occupy the disputed lands. In 1063 Geertruid married Robert I 'the Friesian', count of Flanders, the second son of Baudouin V of Flanders. Robert gave Dirk the imperial Flanders as an appanage - including the islands of Friesia west of the Friesian Schelde. Robert then became his stepson's guardian, gaining control of the islands east of the Schelde. Robert managed to conquer Kennemerland (north of North Holland), but held it only briefly.
“Robert therefore, in both his own right and that of Dirk, was now the ruler of all Friesia. The death of Robert's brother Baudouin VI in 1070 led to civil war in Flanders. The claim of Robert to the guardianship of his nephew Arnulf III was disputed by Richilde, countess of Mons and Hainaut, the widow of Baudouin VI. The issue was decided by Robert's victory at Cassel (in February 1071), where Arnulf was killed and Richilde taken prisoner.
“The war in Holland and Friesia became part of a larger conflict from 1075 onwards. The pope had excommunicated the emperor. The bishop of Utrecht supported the emperor, while the count of Holland supported Pope Gregory VII and anti-king Rudolf.
“While Robert was thus engaged in Flanders, an effort was made to recover the county of Holland and other lands now held by Willem of Utrecht. The people rose in revolt, but were brought back under episcopal rule by an army under the command of Godfrey IV (the Hunchback), duke of Lower Lorraine, by order of Emperor Heinrich IV. In 1076, at the request of Willem, Duke Godfrey visited his domains in the Friesian borderland. At Delft the duke was murdered by revolutionaries on 26 February 1076. Willem of Utrecht died on 17 April 1076.
“Dirk V, now managing his own estate, was quick to take advantage of this favourable juncture. With the help of his stepfather Robert, he raised an army and besieged Conrad of Utrecht, the successor of Willem, in the castle of Ysselmonde, taking him prisoner. The bishop purchased his liberty by surrendering all claim to the disputed lands.
“Dirk and his wife Othelhildis had a son Floris who succeeded him after his death on 17 June 1091.”.2

DEATH 2 Mar 1121, Katwijk, Katwijk Municipality, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands
Floris II, Count of Holland (reigned 1091—March 2, 1121) or Floris the Fat, was the first from the native dynasty of Holland to be called Count of Holland. He was the son of his predecessor Dirk V and Othilde. Floris II ended the conflict with the Bishop of Utrecht (which he inherited from his father, and should be seen in light of the power struggle between the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor), most likely by becoming his vassal. In 1101 he was endowed with the title of Count of Holland by the bishop of Utrecht, after acquiring Rhineland (Leiden and surroundings) ('comes de Hollant', up until that time the counts' dominion had been officially referred to as Frisia).
Around 1108, Floris II married Gertrude, the daughter of Thierry II, the Duke of Lorraine. Gertrude changed her name to Petronila (which is derived from Peter), in recognition of her loyalty to the Holy See. Petronila and Floris II had four children, three boys and one girl: Dirk, Floris, Simon and Hedwig, respectively. Dirk became his successor, Dirk VI of Holland, while Floris became known as Floris the Black and contested his brother's power

Petronella and Floris had four children: Dirk, Floris, Simon and Hadewig, of whom only Dirk would have progeny.
“Floris died on 2 March 1121. His widow Petronella was regent for their son Dirk VI during his minority. In 1133 she founded the abbey of Rijnsburg. Through the support of Emperor Lothar von Supplinburg, who was Petronella's half-brother, Rijnland was formally added to the county of Holland.”.6
