"HUGUES “le Grand”, son of ROBERT I King of France & his second wife Beatrix de Vermandois [Carolingian] ([898]-Dourdan, Essonne 16 Jun 956, bur église de l'Abbaye royale de Saint-Denis). Guillaume of Jumièges records that “Rodbertus dux” married “sororem Herberti” by whom he had “Hugonem Magnum”[98]. The Historia Francorum Senonensis names "Hugo Magnus" as son of "Robertus princeps [et] sororem Herberti"[99]. "Rodbertum fratrem Odonis regis, qui erat pater Hugonis postea Francorum ducus" is named in the Cartulaire de Saint-Bertin[100]. Rodulfus Glaber names "Hugo filius Rotberti, Parisiorum comitis", commenting on the obscurity of his ancestry[101]. He was recognised by the king as heir to his father’s lands in 914. Flodoard records in 922 that, after King Charles III had returned [from “Lotharingia”] to Laon, "Hugo filius Rotberti" arrived “post pascha super Vidulam...ubi apud villam Finimas”[102]. Flodoard records in 922 that "Rotbertus" sent “filium suum Hugonem” with an army of Franks “in regnum Lotharii...propter Capraemontum Gislberti castrum” where he relieved the siege led by King Charles and returned after accepting hostages “a quibusdam Lothariensibus”[103]. He declined the succession to the throne of France on the death of his father in 923, when his brother-in-law Raoul Duke of Burgundy was elected king. Abbot of Saint-Martin de Tours: "l´abbé Hugues" granted "la ville de Mons…dans le pays de Melun" to "la reine Emma sa sœur, fille du roi Robert" by charter dated 926[104]. On the death of King Raoul, Hugues once more declined the succession, instead negotiating the return from England of the Carolingian Prince Louis, son of King Charles III “le Simple”, who was his wife's nephew and whom he installed as King Louis IV. Hugo rector Abbatiæ sancti Martini" names "genitoris nostri Rotberti quondam regis ac genitricis nostræ domnæ Beatricis" in a charter dated 26 Mar 931[105]. "Hugues abbé de Saint-Martin" donated "son alleu de Lachy…dans le comté de Meaux", inherited from "comte Aledramnus", to Tours Saint-Martin by charter dated 14 Sep 937 which names "sa femme Havis"[106]. The position of power acquired by Hugues is confirmed by the title dux francorum/Duc des Francs used in charters dated 25 Jul 936 and 25 Dec 936[107], and the king's references to him as “notre second dans tous nos royaumes”. Disputes between Hugues and the king quickly followed. On the death of King Louis IV in 954, Hugues was confirmed as Duc des Francs. He was granted lordship over Burgundy and Aquitaine[108]. He only succeeded in subjugating the former, succeeding Duke Giselbert as Duke of Burgundy in Apr 956. The Historia Francorum Senonensis records the death "XVI Kal Iul apud Drodingam villam" of "Hugo Magnus dux Francorum" and his burial "in basilica beati Dyonisii martiris Parisius"[109]. The necrology of Chartres cathedral records the death "XVI Kal Jul" of "Hugo dux Francorum"[110]. The Obituaire de Notre-Dame de Paris records the death "XV Kal Jul" of "Hugo dux Francorum"[111]. The necrology of Auxerre cathedral records the death 16 Jun of "Hugo comes"[112].
"m firstly ([914]) [JUDITH] du Maine, daughter of ROGER Comte du Maine & his wife Rothilde [Carolingian] (before 900-925). The marriage of Hugues Comte de Paris with the daughter of Roger Comte du Maine is deduced from Flodoard naming "Rothildis, amitæ suæ [regis Karoli], socrus autem Hugonis" when recording that the king deprived her of "abbatiam…Golam" [Chelles] in favour of his favourite Hagano, the context dictating that "Hugonis" was "Hugo filius Rotberti"[113]. The source which names her father has not yet been identified, but it appears reasonably certain from the sources quoted in the document MAINE that Rothilde's husband was Roger. She is named Judith in Europäische Stammtafeln[114] but the primary source on which this is based has not been identified. According to Settipani her name is not known[115].
"m secondly ([926]) EADHILD, daughter of EDWARD I "the Elder" King of Wessex & his second wife Ælfleda (-937). Flodoard mentions, but does not name, "filiam Eadwardi regis Anglorum, sororem coniugis Karoli" when recording her marriage to "Hugo filius Rotberti" in 926[116]. William of Malmesbury names (in order) "Edfleda, Edgiva, Ethelhilda, Ethilda, Edgitha, Elfgiva" as the six daughters of King Eadweard and his wife "Elfleda", specifying that Ethilda married "Hugh". The Book of Hyde names "Ethyldam" as fourth of the six daughters of King Edward by his first wife "Elfelmi comitis filia Elfleda", specifying that she married "pater Hugonis Capet"[117]. At the time of the couple's betrothal, her future husband sent sumptuous gifts to King Æthelstan, including spices, jewels, richly caparisoned horses, three holy relics and a gold crown[118].
"m thirdly ([9 May/14 Sep] 937) HEDWIG of Germany, daughter of HEINRICH I King of Germany & his second wife Mathilde [Immedinger] ([922]-9 Jan [958 or after 965]). "Hugues abbé de Saint-Martin" donated "son alleu de Lachy…dans le comté de Meaux", inherited from "comte Aledramnus", to Tours Saint-Martin by charter dated 14 Sep 937 which names "sa femme Havis"[119]. Rodulfus Glauber names "sororem [=Otto] Haduidem" as wife of "Hugo dux Francorum cognomento Magnus"[120]. Flodoard refers to "sororem Othonis regis Transfhenensis, filiam Heinrici" as the wife of "Hugo princeps, filius Roberti", without naming her, recording their marriage in 938[121]. Flodoard also refers to "relicta Hugonis" as "amita Lotharius rex"[122]. The Annales Nivernenses record in 958 that "rex et mater sua et Ugo filius Ugonis et mater sua" attended a hearing "apud Marziacum vicum iuxta Nevernis…contra Guillelmum comitem Aquitaniæ post missa sancti Martini"[123]. The necrology of the abbey of Saint-Denis records the death "V Id Jan" of "Hadhuidis comitissa"[124].
"Mistress (1): RAINGARDE [Ringare], daughter of ---. The Historia Episcoporum Autissiodorensium names "Heribertus Francigena filius Hugonis Ducis cognomento Magni ex concubina Raingarda" as bishop of Auxerre from 971 to 995[125]. The same source names "Johannes natione Autissiodorensis, patre Ansaldo, matre Raingarde" as bishop of Auxerre from 996 to 998[126]. The same name in the same area suggests the possibility that Raingarde, mistress of Duke Hugues, was the same person as the wife of Ansoud [I]."

She is named as mother of Comte Rorico in the following charter: “Rorgo comes” donated “predium...in pago Andecavo in condita Maciacense...in Valegia...loco...Maisnisias”, which “genitor meus Gauzlinus et mater mea Adeltrudis habuerunt”, to the abbey of Saint-Maur-sur-Loire, confirmed by Dodon Bishop of Anjou by charter dated 1 Mar 839[28]. Her inclusion in the document suggests that she had a direct interest in the property donated in her own right, which if correct indicates that Adeltrudis originated in the county of Anjou."

"HEINRICH, son of --- (-killed in battle Paris [before Sep] 886, bur St Médard at Soissons). The Annales Fuldenses names "Poppone fratre Henirico et Eginone comitibus"[86]. The Annales Fuldenses record that "Heinricum principum" led the army of Ludwig II "der Deutsche" King of the East Franks into Moravia in 866[87]. The Annales Fuldenses names "Henricum" as "principum militiæ suæ [=Hludowicus Hludowici regis filius]" and as "comitis vassalus" in 871[88]. The Annales Fuldenses records the victory of "Heinricus et Adalhartus" against "Thiotbaldo principe militiæ Hugonis" in 880[89]. The Annales Fuldenses records the civil war between Saxons and Thuringians in 882, through the machinations of "Poppone fratre Heinrici et Egninone comitibus" and Poppo's subsequent conquest of "Thuringis inferior"[90]. The Annales Fuldenses record that "Heinricus frater Popponis" fought the Vikings at "Prumiam" in 883[91]. He was invested as Marquis en Neustrie in 886 by Emperor Karl III "der Dicke", who was at that time briefly King of the West Franks, after the death of Hugues l'Abbé. Abbo's Bella Parisiciæ Urbis records the part played by "Saxonia vir Ainricus" at the siege of Paris in 886[92]. The Annales Fuldenses record that "Heinrico marchensi Francorum" who held Neustria was killed at the siege of Paris in 886[93]. The necrology of Fulda records the death "886 Kal Sep" of "Heinrih com"[94].
"m BABA, daughter of --- (-after 864). The Annalista Saxo names Adalbert and his "pater Heinricus dux, mater Baba dicebatur"[95]. The primary source which confirms her name as Ingeltrudis has not yet been identified. Eckhardt suggests that Heinrich’s wife (whom he calls Ingeltrudis) was the daughter of Eberhard Marquis of Friulia & his wife Gisela [Carolingian], and therefore sister of Berengario I King of Italy[96]. This appears chronologically tight, although possible."

; Per Genealogics:
“Friedrich was born about 912, the son of Wigerich, Graf im Bidgau und Ardennengau, and his wife Kunegund. He was the count of Bar and duke of Upper Lorraine.
“In 955 he married Beatrix, daughter of Hugues 'the Great', duke of The Franks, comte de Paris, and Hadevich von Sachsen; Beatrix was also sister of Hugues Capet, king of France. Friedrich received in dowry the revenues of the Abbey of Saint-Denis in Lorraine. They had four sons of whom Dietrich would have progeny.
“Friedrich constructed a fortress at Fains, on the frontier between France and Germany, and exchanged fiefs with the bishop of Toul. Thereby he created his own feudal domain, the county of Bar, becoming the founder of the house of Bar, a cadet branch of the house of Ardennes.
“The duchy of Lorraine was at that time ruled by Bruno I, archbishop of Cologne, the brother of Emperor Otto I. In 959 Bruno, in concert with his brother, divided the duchy, appointing as margraves (or vice-dukes) Godfrey, count of Hainault, in Lower Lorraine and Friedrich in Upper Lorraine. After Bruno's death in 977, Friedrich and Godfrey were styling themselves dukes.
“Friedrich died on 18 May 978. He was succeeded by his son Dietrich.”.3

There is no proof of the identity of the mother of Beatrix, although it is unlikely that she was the daughter of her father's first wife given the date of her marriage. She acted as regent of Upper Lotharingia for her son Duke Thierry I from 978 to 987, taking an active part in the government of the duchy. She intervened with her brother Hugues Capet over the capture of her son by French troops during the siege of Verdun in 985, and actively attempted to resolve the Franco/German conflict over Lotharingia by diplomatic means. She was imprisoned in an abbey by her son, impatient to assume personal rule, but the Pope obliged him to release her. She visited the monastery of Saint-Dié in 1003 with her family[130].

; Duke Richard I of Normandy, *Fecamp 28.8.933/4, +20.11.996; 1m: ca 962 Gunnor of Danemark/de Crepon (+1031); 2m: Emma of France (*ca 943, +after 19.3.968.)3
; NB: The identity of Fressenda's parents is not known with certainty.
Genealogy.EU (Normany) shows her as the dau. of Richard I of Normandy and his 1st wife, Gunnor.
Boyer (p. 183) shows Fresendis/Fredesina as the dau. of Richard II "the Good" and grand dau. of Richard I.
Racines et Histoire says she was "soeur bâtarde de la précédente" [bastard sister of Murielle de Normandie dau. of Richard]
Genalogics and Med Lands show no parents for her, but Med Lands reports: "A myth, not based on any evidence, emerged in the 16th century to the effect that both wives of Tancred de Hauteville were daughters of Richard I Duke of Normandy."
A series of postings on soc.genalogy.medieval (SGM - now a Google Group in 2001 reviews the evidence:
Per Peter Stewart wrote: "It is thought possible - not quite the same as believed to be "correct" - that Tancred's wives Muriella and Fressendis were illegitimate daughters of Richard II (the Good) of Normandy. They were probably related in some way, and for all I know it may be that at least Muriella was old enough to have been a daughter of Richard I (the Fearless) - but Fressendis seems to have belonged more certainly to a younger generation. (She is credited with at least nine children born up to ca 1045/50, making it unlikely that her father died in 996.)"
Todd Farmerie responded: "The evidence for these connections are a pair of relationship clauses in contemporary (or nearly so) documents. One of these calls William, son of Tancred and Murielle "nepos Richardi Magni ducis Normandiæ", while the other says of Robert Guiscard ". . . inter quos nepos ipsius Ricardi, Robertus nomine, in Appuliam precectus est". Adding in chronology, which would seem to make the two women of the same generation as Richard III, it would seem to make them daughters of his father, Richard II."

Conclusion: I have deleted the connection I had earler for Fressenda to Richard. GA Vaut.16,17,18,19,20,21

     ; Per Med Lands:
"[GERBERGE ([945]-11 Dec [987/991]). Her name and her two marriages are confirmed by the Chronicle of Saint-Bénigne, interpolated into the Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines, which names "Guilelmum Ottonem et eius matrem Gerbergam" when recording that her son was adopted by his mother's second husband "dux Burgundie Henricus"[483]. Her birth date is estimated from the estimated birth date of her son in [960/62]. Her origin is indicated by the Vita of Hugues Comte de Chalon which refers to his (unnamed) sister as having married the duke of Burgundy[484]. Chronologically, this refers most probably to Duke Henri who died in 1002, although the original of this document has not yet been consulted to check whether the wording supports this conclusion. Gerberge's origin has not been corroborated in the other primary sources so far consulted. The Vita appears to indicate that Lambert Comte de Chalon was her father, but this raises several problems if it is correct. Firstly, on the death without direct heirs in 1039 of her supposed brother Hugues Comte de Chalon, the county was inherited by the comparatively obscure children of his younger sister Mathilde, apparently ignoring the superior claims of Gerberge's own numerous descendants, among whom were the powerful counts palatine of Burgundy who would presumably not have missed the opportunity of acquiring another county. Rodulfus Glaber does record that "Hugo filius Lanberti Cabilonensis comitis…episcopus Autissioderi" was an opponent of "Willemus, Henrici ducis priuignus, Adalberti Longobardorum ducis filius"[485], which could explain why Bishop Hugues favoured a nephew by his younger sister to succeed to his county. Nevertheless, after the bishop's death, his past opposition to Comte Otto-Guillaume would have provided an excuse for his son to intervene in the Chalon succession if he had a legitimate claim. Secondly, considering the likely birth date of her son, Gerberge's first marriage must have taken place while her husband and father-in-law were still reigning kings of Italy. They were under continuous pressure from Otto I King of Germany and it is likely that Adalberto's marriage could have brought additional political support. It is not clear how the relatively obscure count of Chalon could have provided this support. Thirdly, after the death in 978 of Lambert Comte de Chalon, and his widow's second marriage to Geoffroy I Comte d'Anjou, no record has been found of Henri Duke of Burgundy intervening to prevent Comte Geoffroy taking control of the county of Chalon, which would have been the likely course of action if his wife was the deceased count's oldest child. Fourthly, Gerberge's estimated birth date creates serious chronological problems (as explained further above) if she was the daughter of Lambert's only known wife Adelais. In conclusion, considerable doubt appears to subsist concerning this origin of Gerberge, although no alternative can so far be proposed if we are to respect the wording of the Vita. The necrology of Auxerre cathedral records the death 11 Dec of "Gerberga comitissa uxor Henrici ducis"[486].

"EUDES ([948]-Château de Pouilly-sur-Saône 15 Oct 1002). The Historia Francorum Senonensis names (in order) "Hugo, Otto et Heinricus" as the three sons of "Hugo Magnus dux Francorum…ex filia Odonis regis"[122]. Flodoard names "Hugonem et Oddonem clericum" as brothers of "Otto filius Hugonis", when he records that the rectores of Burgundy named them as his successors[123]. He adopted the name HENRI, and the title Duke of Burgundy. He possessed the counties of Autun, Beaune and Avallon, and was suzerain of the Counts of Chalon, Tonnerre, Nevers and Auxerre, and probably of the Counts of Mâcon and Oscheret[124]. King Lothaire confiscated the counties of Langres and Dijon in 967 and gave them to the Bishop of Langres[125]. Duke Henri married the widow of the ex-king of Italy who had sought refuge in Autun in 971 and adopted her son by her first marriage, Otto-Guillaume, who later became Comte de Bourgogne et de Mâcon. The Chronicle of Saint-Bénigne, interpolated into the Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines, records the death in 1002 of "dux Burgundie Henricus"[126]. Rodulfus Glaber records the death of "dux Heinricus" in the third year of the millennium at "Castrum Pulliacum super Ararim" in Burgundy and his burial at Auxerre in Oct[127]. The necrology of Auxerre cathedral records the death 15 Oct of "Henricus Burgundiæ marchio"[128].
"m firstly ([973]) as her second husband, GERBERGE, widow of ADALBERTO II di Ivrea ex-King of Italy, daughter of --- ([945]-11 Dec [987/91]). Her name and her two marriages are confirmed by the Chronicle of Saint-Bénigne, interpolated into the Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines, which names "Guilelmum Ottonem et eius matrem Gerbergam" when recording that her son was adopted by his mother's second husband "dux Burgundie Henricus"[129]. Her birth date is estimated from the estimated birth date of her son in [960/62]. The Vita of Hugues Comte de Chalon refers to his (unnamed) sister as having married the Duke of Burgundy[130]. Chronologically, this refers most probably to Duke Henri who died in 1002, although the original of the document has not yet been consulted to check whether the wording supports this conclusion. Gerberge's origin has not yet been corroborated in the other primary sources so far consulted. If the Vita is correct she was Gerberge, daughter of Lambert Comte de Chalon, but this raises several problems if it is correct. Rodulfus Glaber does record that "Hugo filius Lanberti Cabilonensis comitis…episcopus Autissioderi" was an opponent of "Willemus, Henrici ducis priuignus, Adalberti Longobardorum ducis filius"[131], which could explain why Bishop Hugues favoured his nephew by his younger sister to succeed to his county. Nevertheless, after the bishop's death, his past opposition to Comte Otto-Guillaume may have provided an excuse for his son to intervene in the Chalon succession if he had a legitimate claim. Fourthly, Gerberge's estimated birth date creates serious chronological problems if she was the daughter of Lambert's only known wife Adelais. In conclusion, considerable doubt appears to subsist concerning this origin of Gerberge, although no alternative can so far be proposed if we are to respect the wording of the Vita. The necrology of Auxerre cathedral records the death 11 Dec of "Gerberga comitissa uxor Henrici ducis"[132].
"m secondly (before Jun 992, repudiated 996 before 24 Oct) GERSENDE de Gascogne, daughter of GUILLAUME Sanchez Comte de Gascogne & his wife Urraca de Navarra. This second marriage is deduced from the evidence provided by three charters. "Domnus Hugo comes atque mater sua Adeleidis" donated property "in pago Cabilonensi" to the abbey of Paray-le-Moniale by an undated charter signed by "Hugo comes, Adeleidis matris suæ, Mauritii filii eius, Enrici ducis, Garlindis uxoris eius"[133]. "Henrici ducis…[et] dominæ Garsindis comitissæ" and "Henricus dux, Gersindis ducatrix" are named in two charters of Saint-Symphorien d'Autun dated Jun 991 or 992 and 10 May 993 respectively[134]. Her parentage is confirmed by the Historia Abbatiæ Condomensis which notes that "Gimbaldum Comitem, patrem Ugonis Episcopi" donated property "ecclesiam S. Johannis, Cablisa" to the convent of Condom and also "nobilissima femina Gavarsens…eius videlicet neptis, soror Sanctii Guasconiæ Comitis" after returning from "quadam provincia Burgundia…ubi maritum habuerat"[135]. Bouchard suggests that Garlindis/Garsindis are name variants of "Gerberga", the wife of Duke Henri named in earlier sources (and assumed to be his first wife)[136]. However, this appears unlikely to be correct as the suffix root elements of these names "-sendis" and "-berga" are not normally interchangeable and appear separately with different prefix roots in many different contemporary names[137]. It therefore appears likely that "Gersende" was a different person from "Gerberge". Bouchard also highlights that the only allusion to the origin of Duke Henri's supposed second wife is a satirical poem written about Landry Comte de Nevers which includes an obscure reference to a wife who felt distressed and "sought Gascony"[138]. She also comments that the context of the poem implies that, in any case, it was Landry's wife to whom this refers[139]. However, it does not appear that she was aware of the passage in the Historia Abbatiæ Condomensis, quoted above, which appears to confirm Gersende´s parentage conclusively."

"GUY de Mâcon ([982]-1004 or before, bur Dijon Saint-Bénigne). The Chronicle of St Bénigne de Dijon records a donation by "Otto comes cognomento Willelmus" with "filii eius Rainaldi" dated 1004 "pro anima Hinrici Ducis, qui eum loco filii adoptavit et genitricis sue Gerberge uxoris predicti Ducis, ac filii sui Widonis et Hermintrudis coniugis"[87]. "Comes Otto" donated property to Saint-Bénigne-de-Dijon for the souls of "Heinrici ducis qui eum loco filii adoptavit et genetricis sue Gerberge uxoris predicti ducis ac filii sui Widonis et Hermintrudis coniugis" by charter dated 1004[88]. The Chronicle of St Bénigne de Dijon records that he was buried at St Bénigne many years before his father[89].
"m (before 999) --- . The origin of the wife of Comte Guy is not known with certainty. One possibility is that she was --- de Chalon, daughter of Lambert Comte de Chalon & his second wife Adelais ---. This possible origin of the mother of Othon [II] Comte de Mâcon is deduced from the undated charter under which "domnus Hugo comes Cabilonensium" donated property "in pago Augustudunensi in villa Martiniacensi" to Paray-le-Monial which is subscribed by "Ottonis nepotis eius, Teudbaldi nepotis eius, Maltidis sororis eius"[90]. The same relationship is stated in the charter dated 1018 under which "Vualterius Æduorum presul" donated property to the abbey of Flavigny subscribed by "Landricus comes, Otto comes nepos Hugonis episcopi, Tetbaldus comes nepos ipsius episcopi"[91], and in the charter dated 1020 under which "Wido clericus" donated property "in pago Cabillonense" to Cluny, subscribed by "Ugo comes et episcopus et nepos eius Otto comes…"[92]. One explanation is that "Otto comes" in these three charters was the same person as Othon-Guillaume Comte de Mâcon, and that he was nepos of Hugues Comte de Chalon because his mother Gerberge was Hugues's older half-sister. However, as discussed in relation to the Comtes de Chalon, the theory about Gerberge's Chalon origin is far from certain. Another possibility is therefore that the three charters refer to Othon [II] Comte de Mâcon, grandson of Otto-Guillaume, the identity of whose mother has been the subject of much academic speculation. If this second possibility is correct, this unnamed daughter presumably died before her sister Mathilde as she did not subscribe the 1018 charter. Other possibilities are discussed by Le Hête but the author does not refer to these charters[93]."

; According to The Henry Project:
"Eudes, d. after 19 June 946, count of Vienne and Amiens. Eudes was apparently the eldest son of Heribert. He first appears in 927, when a quarrel broke out between king Raoul and Heribert, with Heribert wanting the county of Laon for his son Eudes, and the king giving it instead to Roger, son of Roger ["Anno DCCCCXXVII, inter Rodulfum regem et Heribertum comitem, pro Laudunensi comitatu quem Heribertus Odoni, filio suo, dari petebat, concedente illum rege cuidam filiorum Rotgarii, nomine Rotgario, simultas exoritur." Flodoard, Annales, s.a. 927, 37]. In 928, Heribert obtained Vienne for Eudes from king Hugh of Italy, which, however, Charles Constantine was holding in 931 ["Hugo rex, habens colloquium cum Rodulfo, dedit Heriberto comiti provintiam Viennensium vice filii sui Odonis" Flodoard, Annales, s.a. 928, 43; ibid., s.a. 931, 46]. A year after the death of Heribert, in 944, Eudes was holding Amiens, but was driven out by men of the king ["Ambianensem quoque urbem, quam tenebat Odo filius Heriberti, favente Deroldo episcopo, et tradentibus ipsius episcopus fidelibus, domestici regis recipiunt. Ex quibus rebus ita gestis exoritur iterum discordia inter regem et filios Heriberti." Flodoard, Annales, s.a. 944, 91]. Eudes was still alive on 19 June 946, when he witnessed an act of Hugues le Grand [Settipani (1993), 225, n. 245]."

"EADGIFU ([902/05]-26 Sep after 951, bur Abbaye de Saint-Médard de Soissons). William of Malmesbury names (in order) "Edfleda, Edgiva, Ethelhilda, Ethilda, Edgitha, Elfgiva" as the six daughters of King Eadweard & his wife "Elfleda", specifying that Edgiva married "king Charles"[1663]. The Book of Hyde names "Edgivam" as second of the six daughters of King Eadweard by his first wife "Elfelmi comitis filia Elfleda", specifying that she married "Karolo regi Francorum filio Lodowyci"[1664]. Her birth date range is estimated from the birth of Eadgifu's son in [920/21]. If this is correct, Eadgifu must have been one of King Edward's oldest children by his second marriage. She fled with her two-year-old son to England in 923 after her first husband was deposed. She returned to France in 936. Abbess of Notre Dame de Laon, until 951. Flodoard records in 951 that “Ottogeba regina mater Ludowici regis” married “Heriberti...Adalberti fratris” and that “rex Ludowicus iratus” confiscated “abbatiam sanctæ Mariæ...Lauduni” from her and donated it to “Gerbergæ uxori suæ”[1665].

"HERIBERT [III] "le Vieux" ([910/26]-[983/early 985], bur Lagny). Flodoard names "Heriberti Adalberti fratris" when recording his marriage, and in a later passage "nepotes Hugonis, Heribertus et Rotbertus"[218]. His date of birth has been estimated at [910/15] by Werner[219], whereas Settipani supports a later estimate of [925/26][220]. The former appears more consistent with Héribert's participation in his father's war from 938. If the latter is correct, comte Héribert would have been more than 20 years younger than his wife, which seems unlikely. There appears to be no basis for deciding between one or the other. He is documented with his father between 938 and 942 in the latter's war against King Louis IV, submitting to the king with his father in 942. Under the division of territories organised after his father's death in 943, Héribert became Comte d'Omois and received the fortress of Château-Thierry as well as the abbey of Saint-Médard, Soissons. King Lothaire appointed him comte du palais (comte palatin). He succeeded his brother Robert in 967 as Comte de Meaux et de Troyes. His proposed death date range in [983/early 985] is estimated on the following basis. A letter of Gerbert dated 983 records that "Heriberti Trecassini et Oddonis comitis filii Tedbaldi" were enemies of "Adelbero Remonis archiepiscopus"[221]. However, a letter dated to Apr 985 names "Ottonis et Heriberti", while a letter dated to mid-985 records that "Ottonem, Heribertum" made peace with the archbishop[222]. Another letter of Gerbert dated to [late 986/early 987] records that "O et Heribertus comites" were part of the council of Emma Queen of France[223]. It is assumed that "Oddonis/Ottonem/O" all refer to the same person. However, it is suggested that only the first letter applies to Héribert [III], the change to Héribert [V] (nephew and successor of Héribert [III], son of the latter's brother Robert) being indicated in the subsequent letters by "Heribertum" being named after "Ottonem" instead of before, which suggests that he was the junior of the two from Apr 985. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records the burial of "comes Trecensis Heribertus II cognomento Vetulus" in "abbatiam Latiniaci"[224].
"m (951) as her second husband, EADGIFU, widow of CHARLES III "le Simple" King of the Franks, daughter of EDWARD I King of Wessex & his second wife Ælfleda --- ([902/05][225]-26 Sep after 951, bur Abbaye de Saint-Médard de Soissons). Flodoard records in 951 that “Ottogeba regina mater Ludowici regis” married “Heriberti...Adalberti fratris” and that “rex Ludowicus iratus” confiscated “abbatiam sanctæ Mariæ...Lauduni” from her and donated it to “Gerbergæ uxori suæ”[226]."

; NB: There is no certainty about the parents of Rotrud. The discussion is complex and relies on few hard facts. I would refer readers to the comments in the sources cited here to develop their own opinions. I have chosen to follow the lineage proposed most recently by Christian Settipani, assigning Gerard two wives, and one of them (Rotrud) probably being the dau. of Pepin I King of Auvergne (son of Louis I "The Pious"). If this is correct, the two counts were much older than their wives. Some authors have therefore suggested that "brothers-in-law" is a more accurate translation of generes and that the two counts were therefore married to two daughters of Emperor Louis I[105]. Settipani[106] argues that this is incompatible with the context in which the term is used in the Vita. The Vita Sancti Geraldi Compendium names "Mathildem filiam Pippini Aquitaniæ regis…Geraldi aviam" and his parents "patre Geraldo Auriliaci comite…matre Adaltrude" when recording the birth of "Geraldum" in 855[107].
